Lyndon Johnson and Mac Wallace crossed paths only briefly; but Wallace's life, especially one violent episode and its intricate aftermath, illuminates the dark side of our 36th president. Perhaps no president has a more ambiguous reputation than LBJ. A brilliant tactician, he maneuvered colleagues and turned bills into law better than anyone. But he was trailed by a legacy of underhanded dealings, from his “stolen” Senate election in 1948 to kickbacks he artfully concealed from deals engineered with Texas wheeler-dealer Billie Sol Estes and defense contractors like his longtime supporter Brown & Root. On the verge of investigation, Johnson was reprieved when he became president upon JFK's assassination. Among the remaining mysteries has been LBJ's relationship to Mac Wallace who, in 1951, shot a Texas man having an affair with LBJ's loose-cannon sister Josefa, also Wallace's lover. When arrested, Wallace cooly said "I work for Johnson...I need to get back to Washington." Charged with murder, he was overnight defended by LBJ's powerful lawyer John Cofer, and though convicted, amazingly received a suspended sentence. He then got high-security clearance from LBJ friend and defense contractor D.H. Byrd, which the Office of Naval Intelligence tried to revoke for 11 years without success. Using crucial Life magazine and Naval Intelligence files and the unredacted FBI files on Mac Wallace, never before utilized by others, investigative writer Joan Mellen skillfully connects these two disparate Texas lives and lends stark credence to the dark side of Lyndon Johnson that has largely gone unsubstantiated.

About the Book On July 09, 2017, the History Channel aired a television documentary called Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence, which attracted a world-wide audience of 4.3 million views. The highlight of the History Channel’s Earhart documentary was a photograph discovered by retired federal agent Les Kinney in the National Archives stamped with official Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) markings. In the photo, a ship can be seen towing a barge with an airplane on the back and on a nearby dock are several people, of which two of them resemble Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan. For the truth seeker who is interested in understanding the “whole story” behind Earhart’s round-the-world flight, who earnestly desires to know who really sponsored and funded the flight; why the Electra was modified the way it was; why the plane crashed in Hawaii; why an identical plane of the same model was in Miami, the same week Earhart departed on her trip; what Earhart really did during the week she was in Bandoeng; why Earhart’s radio messages were crafted the way they were; and what really prevented Earhart and Noonan from completing the flight are all questions that are answered in this work (and more), with evidence to back them. Robert Scholz, the leading art critic in the Third Reich, became an officer in the chief art looting unit in France and Kajetan Muhlmann--a leading art historian--was probably the single most prolific art plunderer in the war (and arguably in history). Finally, there is Arno Breker, a gifted artist who exchanged his modernist style for monumental realism and became Hitler's favorite sculptor. If it is striking that these educated men became part of the Nazi machine, it is more remarkable that most of them rehabilitated their careers and lived comfortably after the war. Petropoulos has discovered a network of these rehabilitated experts that flourished in the postwar period, and he argues that this is a key to the tens of thousands of looted artworks that are still "missing" today. Based on previously unreleased information and recently declassified documents, The Faustian Bargain is a gripping read about the art world during this period, and a fascinating examination of the intense relationship between culture and politics in the Third Reich.
