Two murdered princes; a powerful queen betrayed; a nobleman riding towards his certain death... The story of the Princes in the Tower has been one of the most fascinating - and most brutal - murder mysteries in history for more than five hundred years. In a brilliant feat of historical daring, Emma Darwin has recreated the terrible, exhilarating world of the two youngest victims of the War of the Roses: the power struggles and passion that lay behind their birth, the danger into which they fell, the profoundly moving days before their imprisonment, and the ultimate betrayal of their innocence. In A Secret Alchemy, three voices speak: that of Elizabeth Woodville, the beautiful widow of King Edward IV; of her brother Anthony, surrogate father to the doomed Prince Edward and his brother Dickon; and that of present-day historian Una Pryor. Orphaned, and herself brought up in a family where secrets and rivalries threaten her world, Una's experience of tragedy, betrayal and lost love help her unlock the long-buried secrets that led to the princes' deaths. Weaving their stories together, Emma Darwin brilliantly evokes how the violence and glamour of past ages live on within our present.

The Secret Passage (1905) is a mystery novel by Fergus Hume. Although not as successful as The Mystery of a Hansom Cab (1886), an immediate bestseller for Hume, The Secret Passage is a gripping novel with an atmospheric intensity and tightly wound mystery worthy of the best of Victorian fiction. From an author whose work inspired Arthur Conan Doyle, The Secret Passage is a story of murder with a haunting, original conclusion. Susan Grant, a young woman seeking employment, arrives at Rose Cottage, the home of Miss Loach. After a brief but intense interview, Susan begins working as a parlor maid, quickly discovering the high standard to which Miss Loach holds her employees. Across town, her sister Mrs. Octagon, a writer with a penchant for self-promotion, lives with her husband, Peter, and daughter, Juliet. Speaking with Juliet following afternoon tea one day, Mrs. Octagon raises the topic of her sister, whose quiet life she deeply disapproves of. At this moment, as though by a stroke of fate, her husband bursts in with the news of Miss Loach’s murder. As Jennings, a local detective, begins his investigation, he discovers a broad cast of friends, employees, and acquaintances, all of whom harbor some motive—but who could have been driven to murder? Was it Susan, whose history working for a mysterious Spaniard seems questionable at best? Was it Mrs. Octagon, from whom the topic of her sister had always drawn the bitterest of words? As The Secret Passage winds toward its cunning conclusion, one thing becomes clear—the line between malice and murder remains murky, even under the brightest of lights. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Fergus Hume’s The Secret Passage is a classic of English mystery and detective fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Pat Mestern, author of several earlier books and an ardent booster of her hometown, has produced an entertaining personal account of Fergus, while maintaining the historical perspective and utilizing the rich oral history of the area. Her lighter look at some of the characters and the escapades that add flavour to life in small-town Ontario make this a delightful read. Ghost stories and "the legacy of the one-legged chickens" are memorable examples of her Fergus. The settlement of Fergus, originally known as Little Falls, was founded by two Lowland Scots, Adam Fergusson and James Webster, both advocates by profession. The practice they introduced of giving all new streets Scottish names is still maintained by the local council. "I first met Pat Mestern back in 1988 when I arrived in Fergus, Ontario, to perform at the Highland Games. Her gracious reception was the aperture to a community which directly conveyed to me a sense of 'The Auld Country.' The charm of the town and its surroundings along with the enthusiastic greeting I received from the audience is remembered well and has endeared the people of Fergus to me. I am delighted that this community now has a publication to portray its history so that kindred Celts can discover this 'Wee Bit o' Scotland' in Canada." - Alex Beaton, Glenfinnan Music Ltd., Woodland Hills, California.
