The full name of Cariappa was Kodandera Madappa Cariappa. He was the pride of Indian army . He was born on January 28, 1899, at a place called Shanivavsante, in eastern part of Coorg in Karnataka. The place is now known as Kodagn. Cariappaê s father Kodandera was a revenue officer in Madikeri. He used to stay with his family at Lime Cottage. Cariappa had three brothers and two sisters. Everyone at Cariappaê s home addressed him affectionately as •Chimmaê.

After retiring from the Indian Army in 1953, he served as High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand till 1956. His love for the Jawan and his patriotism were legendary and won him the respect and admiration of his countrymen from all walks of life.
