Film And Knowledge

Film has become such an underpinning of art and pop culture that its potential for inspiring serious thought is often overlooked. Our intellectual involvement with film has been minimized as more in the audience want to be merely amazed and entertained. Essays written by both established and cutting-edge philosophers of film concentrate in this work on the value of film in general and the value of certain films in particular for the study and teaching of ideas. Between the two world wars, a distinct and vibrant film culture emerged in Europe. Film festivals and schools were established; film theory and history was written that took cinema seriously as an art form; and critical writing that created the film canon flourished. This scene was decidedly transnational and creative, overcoming traditional boundaries between theory and practice, and between national and linguistic borders. This new European film culture established film as a valid form of social expression, as an art form, and as a political force to be reckoned with. By examining the extraordinarily rich and creative uses of cinema in the interwar period, we can examine the roots of film culture as we know it today.

Michel Foucault’s work on film, although not extensive, compellingly illustrates the power of bringing his unique vision to bear on the subject and offers valuable insights into other aspects of his thought. Environmentalism and ecology are areas of rapid growth in academia and society at large. This introductory text is based on the conviction that understanding movies requires, first of all, an awareness of how film differs from other media, the specific ways in which movies communicate, as well as what they can do and what they have done historically. As Marshall McLuhan once declared, "any understanding of social and cultural change is impossible without a knowledge of the way media work as environments." Therefore, the goal of this introductory text is not to teach students to change their viewing habits, but to make them more aware of the reasons why people respond to movies as they do. The author's aim has been to make students more aware of their own national cinema and to suggest some of the reasons why people respond to Canadian movies in particular ways.

Exploring Movie Construction & Production contains eight chapters of the major areas of film construction and production.
