The hidden treasure of Applington Abbey was cursed by Henry VIII, enraged that the abbot had prevented him from plundering it. For generations, searchers had tried and failed to find it. Then, in 1976, four children hear the legend and decide to hunt for the treasure themselves - with no idea of the perils they will have to face.

"Buried Treasure" is a story about rivalry and love, greed and trust, friends and enemies. Jim and Goodloe Banks fight for the love of May Mangum. Although they seem to be evil adversaries, they spend much of their time together trying to obtain even more details about her and her interests. Their plans however change when May disappears all of a sudden. Their love rival turns to a search mission. Is May the treasure they are not willing to let go? Will they unite in the name of the woman they love? Will they get the future they have longed for or they will be left with the bitter feeling of failure? William Sydney Porter, better known as O. Henry, was an American writer who lived in the late 19th century. He gains wide popularity with his short stories which often take place either in New York or some small American towns. The plot twists and the surprise endings are a typical and integral part of O. Henry’s short stories. Some of his best known works are "The Gift of the Magi", "The Cop and the Anthem", "A Retrieved Reformation". His stories often deal with ordinary people and the individual aspects of life. As a result of the outstanding literature legacy that O. Henry left behind, there is an American annual award after his name, given to exceptional short stories.

Way back in the 16th Century King Henry VIII decided to rob the country's abbeys and churches of all their riches to finance his army. Peakdale Abbey, in North Yorkshire, was very rich, with lots of items made of gold, silver and precious stones which were used in the daily services that took place in the abbey. Abbot Saxton was forewarned by a friend who worked for Henry that the king's henchmen were on their way to rob his abbey. He quickly organised the burial of the valuable items, leaving some less valuable ones on display for the henchmen to take, which they willingly did. The location of the buried treasure was known to only a handful of people, all of whom were unfortunately killed by the collapse of the roof when the abbey was struck by lightning during a Sunday morning service. Amongst the dead was Abbot Saxton himself. As a result the location of the treasure was lost to the world. Although it was searched for in the following years, more recently with the use of metal detectors, it was never found...until a small group of children from a local primary school started to dig up parts of a local farmer's field.

After 500 years Henry VIII still retains a public fascination unmatched by any monarch before or since. Whilst his popular image is firmly associated with his appetites - sexual and gastronomic - scholars have long recognized that his reign also ushered in profound changes to English society and culture, the legacy of which endure to this day. To help take stock of such a multifaceted and contested history, this volume presents a collection of 17 essays that showcase the very latest thinking and research on Henry and his court. Divided into seven parts, the book highlights how the political, religious and cultural aspects of Henry's reign came together to create a one of the most significant and transformative periods of English history. The volume is genuinely interdisciplinary, drawing on literature, art history, architecture and drama to enrich our knowledge. The first part is a powerful and personal account by Professor George W. Bernard of his experience of writing about Henry and his reign. The next parts - Material Culture and Images - reflect a historical concern with non-documentary evidence, exploring how objects, collections, paintings and buildings can provide unrivalled insight into the world of the Tudor court. The parts on Court Culture and Performance explore the literary and theatrical world and the performative aspects of court life, looking at how the Tudor court attempted to present itself to the world, as well as how it was represented by others. The part on Reactions focuses upon the political and religious currents stirred up by Henry's policies, and how they in turn came to influence his actions. Through this wide-ranging, yet thematically coherent approach, a fascinating window is opened into the world of Henry VIII and his court. In particular, building on research undertaken over the last ten years, a number of contributors focus on topics that have been neglected by traditional historical writing, for example gender, graffiti and clothing. With contributions from many of the leading scholars of Tudor England, the collection offers not only a snapshot of the latest historical thinking, but also provides a starting point for future research into the world of this colourful, but often misrepresented monarch.

It is perhaps a matter rather for regret than for surprise that so few attempts have been made to describe, as a whole, the life and character of Henry VIII. No ruler has left a deeper impress on the history of his country, or done work which has been the subject of more keen and lasting contention. Courts of law are still debating the intention of statutes, the tenor of which he dictated; and the moral, political, and religious, are as much in dispute as the legal, results of his reign. He is still the Great Erastian, the protagonist of laity against clergy. His policy is inextricably interwoven with the high and eternal dilemma of Church and State; and it is well-nigh impossible for one who feels keenly on these questions to treat the reign of Henry VIII. in a reasonably judicial spirit. No period illustrates more vividly the contradiction between morals and politics. In our desire to reprobate the immorality of Henry's methods, we are led to deny their success; or, in our appreciation of the greatness of the ends he achieved, we seek to excuse the means he took to achieve them. As with his policy, so with his character. There was nothing commonplace about him; his good and his bad qualities alike were exceptional. It is easy, by suppressing the one or the other, to paint him a hero or a villain. He lends himself readily to polemic; but to depict his character in all its varied aspects, extenuating nothing nor setting down aught in malice, is a task of no little difficulty...
