Excerpt from Fine Willow Basketry While it is strongly urged that traditional methods be adhered to, the same argument does not apply, in the case of designs, and a large variety of pattern and an infinite variety of shape is possible, the latter being suggested by everyday objects such as boxes, bowls, vases, and other brie-a-bmc found in every home. The baskets of commerce can also be taken as models and produced in miniature as, for example, the familiar Christmas hamper. In this little manual restraint has been exercised with regard to the designs used as examples and the reader is recommended to master the traditional forms exemplified here before giving rein to his fancy. One thing is important. As soon as the novice gains some mastery over his material, he should endeavour to work strictly to a shape and measurements previously determined upon. Nothing is easier than to allow the work to get out of hand and if this happens it is useless to attempt to make it come right. There is only one remedy and that the drastic one of cutting down the work to the point where it started to go wrong and doing it over again. In the practice of basket-making speed is an important factor as the work is mainly a repetition of a few simple weaves or strokes. The expert attains speed not by strain and hurry, but by the elimination of all superfluous motions, a point to which the novice should give careful attention, particularly in the preliminary cutting out of material, For example, it is far quicker to slype all the stakes at one opera tion than to do each one separately and insert it in the bottom before doing the next. An hour or so spent in watching an expert basket maker will be an eye-opener in this respect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Basket Willow Nearly half a century ago, on learning that a party in New York had imported from Europe cuttings of the European Basket Willow, I ordered several hundred cuttings for trial; for I had long been convinced that the introduction of any new tree, shrub, or vine that can be cultivated with profit, tends to improve the condition of the farmer, and to add wealth to the country. Excerpt from The Basket Maker Basketry has been called one of the fads of the newest education. It was one of the essentials of the oldest education. Basketry still holds a commanding position among the arts of men, even in countries called highly civilized. Its place in schools is still somewhat in dispute, but unquestionably it offers to children a clean and educative handicraft. Properly taught, it vitalizes certain periods in history, fosters motor control, develops judgment and taste, and familiarizes the pupil with one of the ancient and honorable occupations of mankind. Mr. Turner knows his subject thoroughly, having tramped with Indians for materials, worked with Indians for processes, practised with pupils for methods, and studied with specialists for tasteful results. The chapters of this booklet appeared first as illustrated articles in The School Arts Book, beginning in April, 1905. The demand for them has been so great that the supply of magazines is exhausted, and this reprint is made to meet what is evidently a wide-spread demand for first class instruction in the basic principles of this important kind of manual art. A guide to the history of basketry and willow weaving, from ancient times to today, plus photos and information for crafters. The story begins in prehistory, when people first wove plant fibers together to create containers, shelters, and fences. This book explores the ways in which basketry and willow weaving has continued to be important throughout human history in artistic, economic, and functional terms. It brings us up to date via interviews with modern basketry and willow weaving artisans who generously allowed the author a window into their studios and discussed the way they use and adapt traditional methods, techniques, and tools for the twenty-first century. Photos of their work and their working environments offer a unique view into the world of this ancient craft. Finally, in case you’re inspired to try your hand, the book also has a resources section that includes a valuable list of suppliers of plant fibers, plants, and tools, as well as information about training courses, useful websites and more—everything you need to get started.

Peggy Arnold, and younger twin siblings Mike and Nora, are living with a harsh aunt and uncle after their parents are thought to have been killed in a plane crash. Aided by Jack, an orphan boy they have befriended, they run away to an island on a nearby lake, and together they make a new home constructed with the branches of a willow tree, this much-loved "living house" being one of the highlights of the story. However, living on one's own turns out to be far more difficult than they thought, and, along with a lot of fun and happiness, they also suffer a lot of hardship – especially when winter sets in.
