Forest Service Fish Habitat And Aquatic Ecosystem Research

Presents papers from a conference concerning the relationships between forest land use activities and aquatic resources. Topics of the papers include: restoration of fish habitat; ecosystem diagnostics; watershed analysis; hydrogeology of spawning habitats; human impact on aquatic ecosystems; stream fertilization as a mitigation measure; forest litterfall; suspended sediment regimes; water temperature dynamics; windthrow risk assessment and management; large woody debris dynamics; watershed restoration; cumulative effects analysis; channel morphology; integration of timber harvest with aquatic management; and responses of fish.

The effects of logging and associated activities on fish habitat in southeastern Alaska are discussed, and fish habitat research applicable to southeast Alaska is summarized. Requirements of salmonids for suitable spawning and rearing areas are presented. Factors associated with timber harvest which may influence these habitats are discussed in detail; e.g., sediment, stream temperature, streamflow, logging debris, and chemicals. Recommendations for further research are made.

The 36 papers and panel discussions were reviewed across disciplines and presented at a May 1994 conference in Monterey, California. They cover general perspectives, morphology and systematics, behavior and life history, genetics, and ecosystems and habitat.
