Fresh Perspectives On St John Chrysostom As An Exegete

This book comprises chapters by a group of eight scholars from Australia and two from abroad, aiming to offer fresh, interdenominational, and interdisciplinary perspectives on the life, thought, and legacy of one of the most influential preachers and theologians of early Christianity, John Chrysostom. The contributors to this volume utilise a range of methodologies pertaining to the fields of theology, history, hermeneutics, spirituality, hagiography, pastoral studies, and linguistics. The volume thus unveils the wide ranging significance for Western and Eastern Christianity of Chrysostom's various contributions, within the immediate and distant contexts of these contributions. This scholarly contribution to Chrysostomian, Early Christian, Late Antique, and Patristic studies, is of immediate relevance to the various Christian denominations in Australia and abroad which revere Chrysostom as a preacher, exegete, shepherd, and theologian of note.

World-renowned scholar Michael Gorman examines the important Pauline theme of participation in Christ and explores its contemporary significance for Christian life and ministry. One of the themes Gorman explores is what he calls "resurrectional cruciformity"--that participating in Christ is simultaneously dying and rising with him and that cross-shaped living, infused with the life of the resurrected Lord, is life giving. Throughout the book, Gorman demonstrates the centrality of participating in Christ for Paul's theology and spirituality.

Augustine and World Religions examines Augustine's thought for how it can inform modern inter-religious dialogue. Despite Augustine's reputation as the father of Christian intolerance, one finds in his thought the surprising claim that within non-Christian writings there are 'some truths in regard even to the worship of the One God'. This, it seems, hints at a deeper level of respect and dialogue between religions, because one engages in such dialogue in order to better understand and worship God. The essays here uncover provocative points of comparison and similarity between Christianity and other religions to further such an Augustinian dialogue.

In Revisioning John Chrysostom, Chris de Wet and Wendy Mayer harness a new wave of scholarship on the life and works of John Chrysostom (c. 350-407 CE), which applies new theoretical lenses and reconsiders his debt to classical paideia.

Pastors and leaders of the classical church--such as Augustine, Calvin, Luther, and Wesley--interpreted the Bible theologically, believing Scripture as a whole witnessed to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
