Excerpt from Frozen Asia: A Sketch of Modern Siberia, Together With an Account of the Native Tribes Inhabiting That Region In the compilation of the following pages, I have been guided rather by a desire to awaken an interest in the reader regarding Frozen Asia, than by any hope of producing a volume that could in any way pretend to deal commensurately with so vast a subject. Limited in space, I have endeavoured to select such matters as I thought would prove of general interest, but I deeply regret the inexorable necessity that has precluded my entering at length into many interesting subjects, now left wholly untouched, or pencilled in the merest outline. To his pen I am indebted for the geological sketch of Siberia, and for the Samoeide folk lore stories, as well as for many valuable hints and suggestions throughout the whole of the work.
