(2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. This not only has the effect of reducing the original price of the work considerably, but also allows it to be reissued in a simpler and handier form for sportsmen and naturalists generally. The success of the first edition and requests of my friends who were not in a position to obtain the first edition, combined with a growing taste in the British public for specialistic literature both in sport, art, and ornithology, have induced me to produce the book in its present form; and with all the newest forms of process-illustrations I trust that the book will give as much pleasure to the reader as it has given me in its compilation.
