It is not intended to teach the elements of the handicrafts employed, nor to expound the theoretical sciences which underlie the technics of this service; but only to give such reasons for what is required to be done in the course of the Gas Fitter's everyday tasks, as may help to ensure good work. The book has been compressed, as much as appeared practicable, by the omission of all detail matter which a tradesman with the laudable habit of following the technical press of his craft might be expected to know where to find elsewhere; and where borrowed illustrations are given it is for the exemplification of a type, rather than for any special distinction.
