Globalization and Global Citizenship examines the meaning and realities of global citizenship as a manifestation of recent trends in globalization. In an interdisciplinary approach, the chapters outline and analyse the most significant dimensions of global citizenship, including transnational, historical, and cultural variations in its practice; foreign and domestic policy influences; and its impact on personal identities. The contributions ask and explore questions that are of immediate relevance for today’s scholars, including: How does globalization in its current form present a new set of challenges for states, non-state actors, and individual citizens? How has globalization diminished, expanded, or complicated notions of citizenship? What rights could exist outside the context of state sovereignty? How can social accountability be imagined beyond the borders of towns, cities, or states? What forms of political representational legitimacy could be productive on the global level? When is it useful, possible or desirable for individuals to identify with global political communities? Drawing together a broad range of contributors and cutting edge research the volume offers chapters that seek to reflect the full spectrum of approaches and topics, providing a valuable resource which highlights the value of an extended and thoughtful study of the idea and practice of global citizenship within a broader consideration of the processes of globalization. It will be of great use to graduates and scholars of international relations, sociology, and global studies/affairs, as well as globalization.

The idea of global citizenship is that human beings are "citizens of the world." Whether or not we are global citizens is a topic of great dispute, however those who take part in the debate agree that a global citizen is a member of the wider community of humanity, the world, or a similar whole which is wider than that of a nation-state or other political community of which we are normally thought to be citizens. Through four main sections, the contributors to Global Citizenship discuss global challenges and attempt to define the ways in which globalization is changing the world in which we live. Offering a breadth of coverage to the core rheme of the individual in a global world, Global Citizenship combines two factors-the idea of global responsibility and the development of institutional structures through which this responsibility can be exercised.

The reduction of trading barriers alongside the increasingly advanced technologies has led to a progressively globalized world, which in turn has influenced many areas, including the concepts and practices of citizenship. In practice citizenship is still mostly considered in liberal terms as a set of rights and obligations that accompany specifically defined membership in a nation-state. However, the global flows of information, goods, capital and people are challenging the traditional frameworks of citizenship and changing the way individuals perceive themselves and their place in the world. In addition, citizenship has been transformed in two levels, vertically, between individual citizens and political authorities, as well as horizontally, between citizens. Moreover, transformations can be further observed on both a philosophical and a practical level, which will be investigated in turn. The essay concludes that there is an increased awareness of the global problems facing contemporary world as well as a notion of the need for an increased responsibility, on both individual and nation-state level. However, the future will show whether the increased interconnections between various groups will lead to greater solidarity or generate new conflicts.

Global Citizenship introduces the idea of being a global citizen, and focuses on the roles, rights, responsibilities and relationships of citizens living in a global world.

This wide-ranging volume explores the impact of globalization upon citizenship, with a special focus on the transnational challenges that globalization poses. While there is much debate over the concept, globalization implies at least two distinct phenomena. First, it suggests that political, economic and social activities are becoming increasingly inter-regional or intercontinental in scope. Secondly, it suggests that there has been an intensification of levels of interaction and interconnectedness between states and societies. Citizenship, as one of the foundational concepts of the modern liberal democratic states, provides the normative framework within which globalization debates may be understood and evaluated. It also examines how different concepts, theories and practices of citizenship are evolving in response to globalization. Central questions explored in this text are: • How does globalization challenge traditional conceptions of citizenship in specific respects? • How is globalization creating new citizenships or new civil society spaces? • How is transnational citizenship developing and what problems are associated with it in specific areas? Discussing the theoretical and practical prospects for new forms of liberal, republican and cosmopolitan citizenship, Globalisation and Citizenship will appeal to students and scholars in the fields of international relations, globalization, sociology and political science.

This collection of timely articles is the first to explore the dynamics between globalization and education from a specifically Canadian perspective. The articles engage with emergent debates and new discourses around global orientations to citizenship education currently defining scholarly work and teaching practices in Canada.

The dawn of the twenty-first century has been accompanied by an upsurge of anti-capitalist campaigning, challenging the very basis of the New World Economic order. Dramatic events such as the protests from Seattle to Genoa, have captured media headlines. But media headlines leave key questions unanswered, questions about the ultimate significance of the challenges posed by global social movements and the development of civil society, both South and North. This book sets out to explore the lessons from these experiences of social mobilisation. How can non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations and the labour and trade union movement develop effective campaigning alliances – without becoming institutionalised and incorporated themselves? How can they maintain an effective balance between winning immediate gains without losing sight of longer-term strategies for transformation? How can they work with celebrities to gain media attention -- without losing control of the message? And how can social movements develop organisational forms that are genuinely representative and democratically accountable, globally? These questions are explored through case studies of particular networks, movements and campaigns, to tackle the causes of social inequality and social injustice. It concludes by exploring lessons for building global challenges to neo-liberal agendas and developing more transformatory approaches.

Globalization is changing what citizens need to know and be able to do by interrupting the assumption that the actions of citizens only take place within national borders. If our neighborhoods and nations are affecting and being affected by the world, then our political consciousness must be worldminded. The outcomes of globalization have led educators to rethink what students need to learn and be able to do as citizens in a globally connected world. This volume focuses on research that examines how K-12 teachers and students are currently addressing the challenge of becoming citizens in a globally interconnected world. Although there is an extensive body of literature on citizenship education within national contexts and a growing literature on global education, this volume offers research on the work educators are doing across multiple countries to bring the two fields together to develop global citizens.
