One of the main economic players responsible for Singapore’s economic success is its small and medium-sized enterprises or SMEs. Their overall success has helped propel the country and its people forward. From economic policies to politics, Singapore is a planned and regulated economy. Singapore’s economic success story is actually the result of a form of capitalism carefully calibrated and controlled by the government. An important element or aspect of good critical success factors (CSFs) emerges from the role being played by the government. The existence of good government or public policies that are pro-business is vital for the success of firms. Despite the fact that government policies and CSFs are widely studied in areas around the world including in Singapore, there is no comprehensive prediction model available to test if firms have potential to be successful or are more prone to failures. Much research investigates the non-financial factors contributing to success versus failure of small firms, but empirical tests of the predictability of these factors are less common. This book, which is primarily quantitative/ positivist in nature will attempt to fill this gap.

When researching, teaching or working with information systems in the public sector, one is left with few or often no textbooks that provide useful case studies or surveys on the implementation and effects of integrating information technologies in the organizations' operations. This is surprising since in most first world countries the public sector consumes a substantial part of the gross national product. Even more astonishing is the vast amount of financial and organizational resources that are spent developing and implementing various information systems. We decided to write this book to provide information for those studying information systems at business schools, information and computer departments at collegesl universities, and for those working hands-on with EDI and data networking in public administration. Thus, our primary target groups for this book are professionals, training (MA-courses), computer science, MBA, MP A, and political science. EDI has been seen as a means to wire the various policy areas in the public sector. Those included are not limited strictly to the public organizations, but extend to their trade partners. Also, government has sought ways to stimulate the usage of ED I in the private sector beyond those transactions involving direct communication with the public sector. In this book, we have contributors from eight countries and a total of 14 chapters reporting on issues of importance when developing and implementing EDI, when government wants to stimulate the diffusion of EDI in society, and when organizations want to address the impact of their investments in ED!.

How did the computer industry evolve into its present global structure? Why have some Asian countries succeeded more than others? Jason Dedrick and Kenneth L. Kraemer delve into these questions and emerge with an explanation of the rapid rise of the computer industry in the Asia-Pacific region. Asia's Computer Challenge makes a systematic comparison of the historical development of the computer industries of Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan and concludes that neither a plan versus market, nor a country versus company dichotomy fully explains the diversity found among these countries. The authors identify a new force--the emergence of a global production network. Reaching beyond specific companies and countries, this book explores the strategic implications for the Asian-Pacific countries and the United states. Now East Asia is faced with a challenge; they must make the move from low margin hardware business to high margin software and information businesses, while Americans must respond by maintaining leadership in standards, design, marketing, and business innovation.

This book is a compilation of important contributions from noted scholars, articles derived from JAMPROs Jamaica Investment Forum 2015 written by members of the UWI Mona, WJC faculty as well as significant presentations from the policy makers who form the government of Jamaica. Importantly, this work focuses on examining the centrality of policies coupled with innovation in the transformation of Jamaica as the place to live, raise families and do business as espoused by the Vision 2030 national development plan. This joint work highlights the fundamental role that JAMPRO as the key agency for promoting Foreign Direct Investment in Jamaica plays in the thrust for economic growth and development. Importantly, we highlight some key contributors to the progress we have made in Jamaica through cases of home-grown multinationals such as the Grace Kennedy and Company Limited, LASCO, Kingston Wharves Limited, Sandals (ATL Group), while further noting areas that, with continued thrust and the right policies can fast-track our transformation. The key areas identified are Logistics, Agriculture, ICT/BPO (outsourcing) and Manufacturing. This book provides a valuable contribution to the literature on economic transformation, examining the history, current and new paradigms for the future in order to fast-track the economic transformation of Jamaica.
