Where did we come from? It's a simple question, but not so simple an answer to explain—especially to young children. Charles Darwin's theory of common descent no longer needs to be a scientific mystery to inquisitive young readers. Meet Grandmother Fish. Told in an engaging call and response text where a child can wiggle like a fish or hoot like an ape and brought to life by vibrant artwork, Grandmother Fish takes children and adults through the history of life on our planet and explains how we are all connected. The book also includes comprehensive backmatter, including: - An elaborate illustration of the evolutionary tree of life - Helpful science notes for parents - How to explain natural selection to a child

In 1954 the author, aged 18, spent a year as an “au pair” in a French chateau. From there she went to East Berlin at the height of the Cold War to work for two years as a translator. During these two years she travelled to Moscow and across Siberia and Mongolia to China. In 1958 she spent seven months in South Sudan and from there she travelled to Aswan in Upper Egypt by paddle steamer on the Nile. In Aswan she was arrested, locked up for a few days and returned to Khartoum, Sudan. In 1959 she embarked on a four year course at a Scottish University. There was further travel in East Africa in the 1960s. In later life she spent four years in Tanzania, Bulgaria and Poland. The final chapter tells us something about her childhood during World War II.

A Can of Nuts is just that...short stories, poem, essays and fish stories. Some are very funny, some will make you stop and think and some will make you feel good. There is a tribute to his adopted father, Jim L. Anglin, who was a song writer and a very early influence in the writer's life both as a person and a lover of music. The essays have subjects far ranging from the treatment of African Americans in the 1950's to what's good to eat for the holidays. The short stories just as varied in nature. One is about a murder while one is about a holiday gathering of a family whose members come from far away to be with their parents and siblings. Some of the poems are heart felt while others are of a whimsical nature. One outstanding entry is Homeless. For the lighter side there is a selection of fishing stories that come from Arkansas to Georgia to Florida and Tennessee. Most are actually true but some are, let's say, enhanced. Altogether, it is a good read. Enjoy!

"A deathbed shouldn't be the peacemaker in this family." Fifteen-year-old Renee Steele never understood what PaPa's words meant, until she's caught in the middle of a growing battle between her two older cousins. Their clashing attitudes regarding skin tone, trigger a sensitive nerve in their Grandma Bell. As tension mounts between the three girls, Grandma Bell detects trouble returning from the grave. She’s determined to stop it, and takes the girls on a quest back in time to do it. Due to a lack of money, the newlyweds are forced to live with Buck’s parents, Silas and Emma. Grandma Bell's newlywed dreams turn into her worst nightmare, as she begins her married life as the despised dark-skinned daughter-in-law. Meet Grandma Tull, master storyteller, who will lead you into a twisting weave of stories within stories. Grandma Tull's Stories is a fairy tale with a touch of fantasy, a bit of magic and the menace of evil. It is a story of good versus evil; a tale of how the wondrous powers of love and justice will prevail over those things that haunt the land and stalk the night. It is the stories Grandma Tull tells to her granddaughter, Rosie, over the course of Rosie's life as she grows to young womanhood. Growing up listening to her grandmother's stories, stories ranging from Grandma Tull's narrative taken from her own life to tall tales and legends of the land, Rosie came to understand that within every story lies a heart of truth. She began to realize that each of Grandma Tull's stories build upon the previous events to form a rich history she must draw on in order to battle an ancient evil: a Troll King suspended long ago into the shape of a tree; a creature no longer troll, no longer tree, but something else, something sleek and powerful that hatred gave purpose and evil gave power. This ancient evil slides from his swamp home poisoning the land, and now he hunts Rosie.
