Morgan Russell, Sienna Borden, and Lenore Huston almost always see each other in the infusion lab of the Oncology Department of The Center. All three are being treated by Dr. Lucille Peyton, a hardworking, dedicated physician and friend. All of them are battling one common enemy: cancer. While life itself is a constant challenge in the course of their treatment, The Center is undergoing rapid changes under new management that are determined to keep the hospital from bankruptcy. Dr. Jerry Cherry, an accountant, currently heads the board of directors. His resolve to downsize the hospital staff and departments for financial stability clashes with the doctors’ ethos and primary duty: the treatment of patients to the best of their abilities. For unknown reasons, the Oncology Department seems to be the hardest hit by layoffs, and Dr. Peyton becomes the recipient of charges for company violations that threaten to end her career as physician forever.

Reissuing five works originally published between 1937 and 1991, this collection contains books addressing the subject of time, from a mostly philosophic point of view but also of interest to those in the science and mathematics worlds. These texts are brought back into print in this small set of works addressing how we think about time, the history of the philosophy of time, the measurement of time, theories of relativity and discussions of the wider thinking about time and space, among other aspects. One volume is a thorough bibliography collating references on the subject of time across many disciplines.

The much-anticipated anthology on Plato'sTimaeus-Plato's singular dialogue on the creation of the universe, the nature of the physical world, and the place of persons in the cosmos-examining all dimensions of one of the most important books in Western Civilization: its philosophy, cosmology, science, and ethics, its literary aspects and reception. Contributions come from leading scholars in their respective fields, including Sir Anthony Leggett, 2003 Nobel Laureate for Physics. Parts of or earlier versions of these papers were first presented at the Timaeus Conference, held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in September of 2007.To this day, Plato's Timaeus grounds the form of ethical and political thinking called Natural Law-the view that there are norms in nature that provide the patterns for our actions and ground the objectivity of human values. Beyond the intellectual content of the dialogue's core, its literary frame is also the source of the myth of Atlantis, giving the West the concept of the "e;lost world."e;

Canons are central to our understanding of our culture, and yet in the last thirty years there has been much conflict and uncertainty created by the idea of the canon. In essence, the canon comprises the works and artists that are widely accepted to be the greatest in their field. Yet such an apparently simple construct embodies a complicated web of values and mechanisms. Canons are also inherently elitist; however, Carys Wyn Jones here explores the emerging reflections of values, terms and mechanisms from the canons of Western literature and classical music in the reception of rock music. Jones examines the concept of the canon as theorized by scholars in the fields of literary criticism and musicology, before moving on to search for these canonical facets in the reception of rock music, as represented by ten albums: Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited, The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, The Beatles' Revolver, The Velvet Underground's The Velvet Underground & Nico, Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, The Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St., Patti Smith's Horses, The Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks: Here's the Sex Pistols, and Nirvana's Nevermind. Jones concludes that in the reception of rock music we are not only trying to organize the past but also mediate the present, and any canon of rock music must now negotiate a far more pluralized culture and possibly accept a greater degree of change than has been evident in the canons of literature and classical music in the last two centuries.
