A descriptive account based on the disease of sarcoidosis has been illustrated in this book. Sarcoidosis refers to a disease which causes inflammation in various parts of the body. The reason for such inflammation still remains unknown. In general situations, whenever foreign substances enter into the body, the immune system fights back by generating immune responses. Inflammation is a part of these immune responses but it usually subsides when the foreign antigens leave the body. In sarcoidosis, abnormal clumps of granulomas tissues are formed in the body and the inflammation continues. It can affect various parts of the body but it mostly affects lungs and may also affect lymph nodes, eyes, skin and liver. The cause of sarcoidosis remains unrecognized. However, some researches indicate that it may be due to extreme sensitivity or extreme immune response to certain substances. This disease is also assumed to possess genetic components and may pass on in the family. It affects people between the age of 20 to 50 years. Also, it is more likely to affect African Americans than Caucasians and, females than males. The symptoms of this disease primarily depend on the organ involved. This book focuses on diagnosis and treatment of this mysterious disease.

Sarcoidosis is a challenging condition. First identified in 1877, it has been considered a rare condition. However, the lifetime risk of sarcoidosis is about 2.5% for African Americans and almost 1% for Caucasians making it a rather common occurrence. Despite that, it remains an elusive condition with no obvious etiology and is often a challenge to treat. The disease is well known to cause a multisystem involvement but the general pulmonologist is often left carrying the bag as the "sarcoidologist" because it affects the lungs in over 90% of patients. However, managing multisystem sarcoidosis is a tough task and very few resources are available to help the practitioner taking care of the patient with sarcoidosis. As pulmonologists with deep interest in sarcoidosis, we felt that a handbook with organ based manifestations of sarcoid would be a very helpful resource for our colleagues. As a result, this book came into being. It is a clinical handbook that bridges the gap between short reviews on sarcoidosis and detailed monographs regarding all aspects of the disease and should come in handy to the practicing clinician. It is a result of the hard work of several outstanding clinicians well-known in the world of sarcoidosis who have put a lot of hours into their work. We deeply acknowledge their time and effort.

This book discusses the severe chronic disease of Sarcoidosis. Even though Sir Jonathan Hutchinson explained sarcoid lesions more than a century ago but the cause of this granulomatous disease is still unrecognized. While many patients affected by this disease enter spontaneous remission, some patients relapse after intervention or get chronically affected which remains an unexplained characteristic of sarcoidosis. This book highlights advances and recent developments in the ongoing researches on sarcoidosis which contribute to our understanding of the complex nature of this disorder. It presents a variety of topics including a recent approach of etiology as an endogenous infection caused due to hypersensitivity to indigenous bacteria, new directions in therapy, new diagnostic approaches with FDG-PET and EBUS-TBNA, and latest immunopathogenesis and genetic factors. This book will assist the readers in their practice and researches of sarcoidosis.
