They gathered gradually, however - that was something; and what was more, she had naturally a stout heart and cheerful spirit, with which to encounter their threatening gloom. Had these supports once failed her, had she yielded but for a single day or hour to morbid sensitiveness, or dark forebodings, it is impossible to say into what depths she might have been plunged.
