This book is based on the proceedings of a successful Boerhaave International Symposium on colorectal cancer held at the University of Leiden, 6-9 June, 1979. I would like to offer grateful thanks to the eminent clinicians and scientists who contributed both to the Symposium and to this book. Colorectal cancer is a very common form of malignancy, particularly in the Western world, and there have been a number of recent developments in the management of this condition. This book has attempted to collate informa tion on the current methods of investigation and treatment and I believe that it will prove valuable to all those interested in oncology. The contents range widely, covering the entire field from epidemiology through screening methods, diagnostic approaches and therapy of both primary and secondary disease. Perhaps the most outstanding new areas discussed and reflected in the proceedings are the possible range and scope of screening techniques, the new possibilities both in treatment and in endoscopic surgery now available as a result of developments in fibre-optic endoscopy, and new approaches and important parameters in staging of the disease.

It was with very much pleasure that I accepted the invitation to chair this workshop on Glucagon in Gastroenterology. Not least among the reasons for my accepting was the fact that it would get me out from behind my administrator's desk at the univer sity and enable me to spend what promised to be a few refreshing hours in a field where so much is apparently happening. Another reason for my accepting was the attractiveness of the format planned for the workshop. It was to be a working event. The programme had been carefully planned to ensure that all aspects of the subject were covered and a very tight schedule was drawn up for we had to deal with the whole field in just one day. There was to be a small, truly international, list of participants, and, apart from those presenting papers, only two or three specially invited observers were to be present. Above all, perhaps, was the fact that the meeting was to be a multi disciplinary one.

Continuing the tradition set by the first and second editions, each a bestseller in its own right, the third edition of Immunotoxicology and Immunopharmacology provides reviews of environmental agents, updated to reflect the latest information on how these agents influence immune system function and health. For the first time in the book's history, an entire section covers the phylogeny and ontogeny of the immune system, spanning levels of biological complexity from earthworms to marine mammals.
