Fiery passion. Fierce enemies. Forbidden attraction. A modern British spy and a medieval Highlander fight for a shared destiny of love and freedom. Scotland, 2022. Horses, tents, and handsome Highland warriors—preparations for the Battle of Bannockburn reenactment are in full swing when British intelligence agent Danielle Field visits Stirling Castle. Highland warrior Colum MacDonald betrayed his clan to save his queen. Only helping Robert the Bruce win the upcoming battle will restore his honor. Discovering Danielle listening to the Scots’ strategy, he mistakes her slim figure and masculine clothing for that of an English lad—a spy and maybe even an assassin. This is a reprint of J. P. MacLean's celebrated study of the Scottish Highlanders in America, the first work devoted exclusively to the subject. It presents an interesting account of Highland emigration, giving first an overview of the Highlanders of Scotland and then a description of the events which led to the various emigration and resettlement schemes, subsequently detailing the history of Highland settlements in the American colonies and Highlander participation in the French and Indian Wars and the Revolution. And it is laced throughout with lists of early land grants, petitioners, and officers of Highland regiments. In addition, some forty-five pages of the book are devoted to biographical sketches of distinguished Highlanders who served the cause of either Great Britain or America during the Revolution.

Rebellion was recurrent in the Highlands because the Gaels (Scoti) were an often-oppressed indigenous minority in the nation, Scotland, to which they gave their name. They spoke a language, Gaelic, few outsiders would learn, and had their own family and social system, the clans. Warfare was bloody, culminating in the catastrophe of Culloden Moor during the doomed quest to restore the Stuart kingship to all of Britain. Economic hardship, including the near-genocidal Clearances, in which tenant farmers were replaced with sheep, drove the Gaels from the glens and islands, so that most today live in the diaspora, including millions in North America. Although the Gaels lack a single genetic identity, they clearly draw from distinct roots in the Irish, Norse and Picts. Despite their hardship, the Gaels are also presented in romantic portrayals by the artistic elite of other nations. This book offers ways in which the reader might find roots and ancestry in unfamiliar terrain. Chapters discuss the landscape and language of the Highlanders, the rise of clans, feuds and invasions, and eventual emigration.
