«¿Qué es el tiempo? Si nadie me lo pregunta, lo sé. Pero si quisiera explicárselo a quien me lo pregunta, no lo sé». San Agustín de Hipona (354-430 d. C.) ¿Cómo ha sido la evolución del concepto de tiempo a lo largo de nuestra historia? ¿Cómo diferentes disciplinas como la astronomía, la física, las matemáticas, la biología o el arte han abordado su estudio? ¿Qué formas de medirlo hemos usado desde la Antigüedad? ¿Cómo ha sido el camino hacia la precisión de medida actual desde los primeros calendarios? ¿Cómo afecta el paso del tiempo a nuestra biología y cómo nuestro cuerpo es capaz de medirlo? El tiempo está presente en nuestras vidas de forma permanente, su discurrir nos afecta, entendemos que lo podemos y lo debemos medir, que nos es útil para organizar nuestra vida, que su transcurrir a veces parece que se nos pasa en un soplo, e incluso hace que nos aferremos a la vana idea de que quisiéramos que no pasara nunca. Desde la más remota antigüedad el hombre adaptó su ciclo vital, económico y social al sempiterno girar de los astros en el cielo, y desde entonces no ha querido nunca modificar esa pauta del tiempo reguladora de su vida. La humanidad, representada por sus mejores pensadores, quizá no haya llegado a desentrañar las más íntimas esencias del concepto del tiempo, pero ha sido capaz de construir los más sofisticados y maravillosos instrumentos, capaces de ayudarle a medirlo y a regular, de esa forma, toda su actividad social con absoluta precisión. Hasta hace muy poco, en nuestro debate era una rara avis poder escuchar a ucranianos hablar en primera persona de sus experiencias y compartir sus perspectivas, sus anhelos, como el sujeto histórico que conforman. Este libro, anterior a la invasión rusa a gran escala de 2022, surgió en gran medida en respuesta a ello. Era necesario entonces y sigue siéndolo ahora: el futuro de Ucrania como país europeo libre e independiente, un país normal, con una vida digna, sigue desgraciadamente en cuestión. Que se haya traducido al español un libro así, es muy buena noticia: en nuestra lengua y contexto cultural, es aún enorme el vacío de conocimiento sobre Ucrania - y más aún contada por intelectuales ucranianos.Así que por favor lean a estos autores y autoras ucranianas con calma, sin prejuicios ni ideas preconcebidas: escúchenles, tienen mucho que decir, que contar. Quién sabe, quizás se animen después a coger un avión y un tren - esos magníficos trenes ucranianos que me inspiraron a escribir allí - para conocer de primera mano las historias o, mejor aún, experiencias históricas vivas y personajes vivos que fluyen a través de estas páginas.

Kindleberger, Agenda para una historia radical, de E. P. Thompson o La investigacion historica: teoria y metodo, de Julio Arostegui. Este libro se ocupa del desarrollo de los metodos para medir el tiempo, pero tambien estudia como ha cambiado la percepcion del tiempo y de su significado desde la prehistoria hasta nuestros dias.

Trees have been deliberately connected with houses since they were introduced as a prominent part of architectural design. The relationships of contiguity between houses and trees have existed since ancient times. However, at the end of the 19th century those links became explicit in the design process, as the house emerged as one of the fundamental architectural programs, and as the result of an increasing sensibility towards environmental aspects and the landscape. The first part of this publication is to present a collection of exemplary five houses that evinced explicit relationships with pre-existing trees. The five twentieth century projects are: La Casa (B. Rudofsky, 1969), Cottage Caesar (M. Breuer, 1951), Ville La Roche (Le Corbusier & P. Jeanneret, 1923), Villa Pepa (J. Navarro Baldeweg, 1994) and Hexenhaus (A. & P. Smithson, 1984-2002). The second part of the book contributes three theoretical concerns for the contemporary project, those ones which are established in the process, with respect to time, place and outdoor domesticity in modern western housing. One of these theoretical contributions establishes that any house located on a site finds a significant place in conjunction with the preexisting trees. The second contribution describes the effects in terms of time, in addition to spatial considerations, which trees can contribute to the architectural project. Finally, the establishment of these connections between architecture and trees enlarges the idea of the house: the tree serves to draw the surrounding environment into the house and, as a result, becomes an intrinsic part of the house itself.
