Lexington is known as the "Horse Capital of the World," but the city's history runs much deeper. Learn about the mayor who refused the Ku Klux Klan permission to march and organize in the city. Meet one of the nation's foremost advocates for voting rights for women who was a native of the city. Visit the many small hamlets around Lexington that were settlements for the formerly enslaved. This fascinating illustrated guide is “a must for any Civil War buff visiting or living in New York City” (New York Journal of Books). Few Americans associate New York City with the Civil War, but the most populated metropolitan area in the nation, then and now, is filled with scores of monuments, historical sites, and resources directly related to those four turbulent years. Veteran author Bill Morgan’s The Civil War Lover’s Guide to New York City examines more than 150 of these largely overlooked and often forgotten historical gems. Morgan’s book takes readers on a journey of historical discovery. Walk inside the church where Stonewall Jackson was baptized, visit the building where Lincoln delivered his famous Cooper Union Speech, and marvel that the church built by the great abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher is still used for worship. A dozen Civil War–era forts still stand (the star-shaped bastion upon which the Statue of Liberty rests was a giant supply depot), and one of them sent relief supplies to besieged Fort Sumter in Charleston. Visit the theater where “Dixie” was first performed and the house where Stephen Crane wrote The Red Badge of Courage. After the war, New York honored the brave men who fought by erecting some of the nation’s most beautiful memorials in honor of William T. Sherman, Admiral David Farragut, and Abraham Lincoln. These and many others still grace parks and plazas around the city. Ulysses S. Grant adopted New York as his home and is buried here in the largest mausoleum in America (which was also the most-visited monument in the country). See the homes where many generals, including Winfield Scott, George B. McClellan, and even Robert E. Lee, once lived. Complete with full-color photos and maps, Morgan’s lavishly illustrated and designed volume is a must-have book for every student of the Civil War and for every visitor to New York City.

Excerpt from Guide to Lexington, Kentucky: With Notices Historical and Descriptive of Places and Objects of Interest, and a Summary of the Advantages and Resources of the City and Vicinity No American city of its age can more justly claim the attention of the tourist than Lexington. It is rich in historic associations, is a complete epitome of Old Kentucky life and manners, and is surrounded by all the attractions of a region which, for pastoral beauty and fertility, is unsurpassed upon the face of the globe. Almost in its suburbs is the site of Bryant's Station, so celebrated for the siege it sustained at the hands of the British and the Indians a hundred years ago; noted old Boonsborough, and the tragic battle field of Blue Licks arc not far distant, and within half an hour's ride from the city stands the highest pier bridge in the world in the midst of the wild and magnificent scenery of that wonderfully picturesque river - the battlemented Kentucky. Lexington, the seat of justice of Fayette County, and the social and commercial capital of the famous "Blue Grass Region," is situated in what Bancroft styles, "the unrivaled valley of Elkhorn creek," and is, by rail, ninety-four miles east of Louisville and eighty miles south of Cincinnati. Her population is about twenty thousand. The streets, which are laid off at right angles, are adorned with handsome business houses and private residences, and the splendid macadamized roads, which radiate from the city in every direction, lead the tourist to landscapes strikingly English in appearance, dotted with veritable "Old Kentucky Homes." and with extensive stock-breeding establishments, where herds of thoroughbred cattle graze, and from whence have gone forth most of the noted blood horses of America. The annual sales of horses and cattle Held here are the most extensive of their kind in the world. Lexington has ten newspapers, four of which are daily; twenty-two churches, and twenty-three educational institutions, including one university, a new State College, a Commercial College, three large female seminaries, and flourishing public and private schools. Her railroad facilities have lately been greatly increased, and the outlook of the city is exceedingly encouraging. Trade which has heretofore been heaviest in grain, groceries, dry goods, whisky, hemp and live stock is opening new channels and extending and taking on a far more enterprising phase.
