Excerpt from A History of German Literature IN writing this volume, it was my task to compress more than a thousand years of literary history into a volume of about four hundred pages. The book was not to be a collection of sheaths garnered here and there in favourite fields, but a real history, dealing with the whole subject coherently and with due regard to the relative importance of periods, writers, and writings. As it was evident that I should be obliged to omit freely and boldly, I decided, first of all, to omit the scholars, philosophers, and men of science, that is, to confine myself pretty closely to literature in the restricted English sense of the word. The broader conception of literature is no doubt the more philosophic, but it is less convenient for a writer who must economise space at every step. The German genius has done much of its best work in scholarship, philosophy, and science, but I was not writing a history of the German genius. Excerpt from A History of German Literature, Vol. 1 Tms work is a history of German literature from the earliest times to the death of Goethe. The first chapter traces the roots of German nationality back to the period preceding the Aryan separation, and presents a picture of the intellectual condition of our forefathers at the time when they became known to the Romans. The second chapter treats of the rise and development of the German hero-legends in the epoch of the migrations, and during the Merovingian period. Excerpt from Outlines of the History of German Literature The present little volume is long overdue; it was originally my intention to accompany my History of German Literature with a briefer introduction to the subject, and a considerable part of the present book dates back to the time of my occupation with the History. The point of view from which I have regarded the subject will be found to be not essentially different from that of the larger book; and, as in the latter, I have considered it advisable to keep as far as possible to accepted judgments, rather than to obtrude divergent personal views which in a book of this scope there is not room to support. The economy of space compared with the larger book has been attained by the suppression of detail concerning minor writers; the chief writers and works have, on the other hand, been dealt with on what may seem a disproportionate scale. But this is inevitable in a small book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature The news of the occurrence spread rapidly, and all through the day two or three hundred people from Rodez - men, women, and children - were standing on both shores staring with a look of fascination and self-induced horror into the depths of the ravine. The question was raised whether it was not a will-o'-the-wisp that had misled the old man. A woman alleged that she had spoken with a shepherd who declared he had heard a cry for help; this, it is true, occurred about midnight, and Fualdes had left his house at eight o'clock. A stout tinker contended that the darkness had not been as dense as all believed; he him self had crossed the fields, on his way from La Valette, at nine o'clock, and the moon was then shining. The inspec tor of customs took him severely to task, and informed him that a new moon had made its appearance the day before, as one could easily find out by looking in the calendar. The tinker shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that in such con junctures even the calendar was not to be trusted. Excerpt from History of German Literature: Based on the German Work of Vilmar The work on which the following pages are based has reached a sixth edition within a short period of time, and enjoys a high reputation in Germany. That portion which treats of the Heroic Sagas is considered superior to anything that has been written on the subject. Its author, Vilmar, held an office in the Department of Public Worship and Education, under the notorious Hessian minister, Hassenpflug. According to the German papers, he belongs to that party in Germany which stands up for the national Lutheranism as opposed to the foreign Calvinism. These views, which Vilmar advocated with great vigour, excited odium in some quarters; and on the disgrace and downfall of Hassenpflug, Vilmar's retirement was greeted with loud jubilee by the democrats, who stigmatised him as a tyrant and represser of national liberty. Since then, he has been Professor of Theology at Marburg. In many respects, Vilmar's work (which, it is only fair to say, exhibits no leaning towards despotism, civil or ecclesiastical) surpasses those of his predecessors on the same subject.
