INTRODUCTION In my first book, The Art & Science of Drawing, I teach the fundamental skills required to draw. In this book, I teach how to apply those skills to figure drawing. Figure drawing is one the most challenging but fulfilling drawing practices you can undertake. Drawing the human body puts you in touch with the deepest parts of humanity. A successful figure drawing requires you to understand the body as a functional machine and to be captivated by the body’s intense beauty and expressive nature. I fell in love with figure drawing in my teens and have made it an absolute priority in my life. However, learning how to do it was not a straightforward path. It seems there are an infinite number of approaches to figure drawing, many of which contradict one another. I tried out every method I encountered as I struggled to master the craft. Over the years, I realized there were tried-and-true fundamentals that many of the masters agree upon and use in their own practice. But there also seemed to be significant gaps in the canon of figure drawing tools and techniques. There seemed to be many unanswered questions. So, in addition to learning from others, I began exploring and experimenting with new methods of my own. This book is my best attempt at providing you, dear reader, with a straightforward approach to the fundamentals of figure drawing that is both logical and lyrical. This is the book I wish I had found when I was learning. It contains many tried-and-true methods that have been refined over centuries. It also contains methods of my own design that, if they exist elsewhere, I am not aware of. In this book, I present a complete process for learning the fundamentals of figure drawing. No single book can contain the entirety of knowledge you will need to master the craft of figure drawing, but this book provides the essential, foundational skills and strategies you will need to develop competence. Once you have learned the skills in this book, you will be able to build upon them until you reach mastery.

Metropolis is an award-winning K-12 project-based ("STEAM") curriculum used by teachers, museum educators, non-profits, architects, urban planners, government agencies and other adults interested in engaging children in community improvement projects, city planning and architecture. The common-core aligned curriculum was developed by John Martoni, an urban planner and elementary school teacher in Southern California. Students are presented with a series of design challenges that take them step-by-step through the process of designing their very own eco-friendly city of the future (while learning about planning issues such as climate change, sustainability and sprawl). Students then apply their new urban design skills to research problems in their real-life community and to propose solutions to local leaders. Metropolis offers students an opportunity to use a creative design process to express their heritage, interests, and ideas while doing this fun, hands-on design project. It is a standards-based, interdisciplinary unit of study that can be easily adapted for students in upper elementary grades, middle school and high school. Language arts, mathematics, health, art, science, and social studies are embedded throughout the curriculum. The new 2022 version has been updated with new activities and graphics. It also includes brand new bonus chapters: -"Planning for Pandemics" (a fascinating look at how urban design has been affected by pandemics throughout human history--including Covid 19). -"Career Corner" (spotlighting the contributions and achievements of people of color and women in the design and building professions) 21st CENTURY SKILLS EMPHASIZED IN METROPOLIS: -Collaboration -Communication -Empathy -Adaptability -Critical Thinking -Creativity -Multiculturalism PEDAGOGIES EMBEDDED IN METROPOLIS: -Project-Based Learning -Design Thinking / Design-Based Learning -STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) -Integrated Thematic Instruction -Place-Based Learning

Arguably the most challenging of subjects for the artist, the human figure also offers opportunities for works of incredible beauty and complexity. In this book, one of today's leading figurative artists shares techniques and approaches for drawing the human form. With a reverent grounding in the methods of the Old Masters and keen perspective developed over Jon DeMartin's 20+ years of making and teaching art, this comprehensive workshop focuses on the power of line and how it can be used to achieve a convincing sense of dimension and life. Beautifully illustrated with classical drawings as well as step-by-step progressions, these lessons explore the enlightening practice of copying, how to use proportion and measurement wisely, drawing the head and its features, rendering the figure in motion, short-pose exercises, and much, much more. Throughout, artists will master techniques for achieving a compelling "living force" in their drawings, while building a base of understanding that will ultimately make the process more intuitive and enjoyable.
