Organization Development, or OD as it is often referred to, is something of a sexy field that is part of the family of the Human Resource discipline, including training, coaching, mentoring, business strategy, change management, etc. The Title When being trained as an OD Practitioner at such institutes as National Training Laboratories (NTL) and some universities, one may hear the analogy that people fear change because it can mean the end of something with which we are familiar. Thus the concept of "death" (loss of job, status, position, group esteem, etc.) is part of the psychology noted in ones education in the field to help practitioners understand others angst over taking risks accompanying change. The title is, therefore, an obvious pun on "Overdose"/OD and living to tell about it relates to how to avoid unneeded risk for the practitioner and the client. Benefits of the Book The book is useful because it: - Is a new and unique perspective on OD - Is theoretically substantive and not academic - Provides practical actions and tools - Invites various approaches to OD - Is humorous/wry for a serious subject - Integrates theory with practice - Balances client and consultant relationships with business and organizational goals - Demonstrates key points with short cases - Gives the reader the whole loaf Reviewers Comments "Its not easy for someone with such a wealth of experience to distill it into a short tome. Bill has done his work and our profession a great service."(Nadine Pearce, Sr. Manager of OD, Nabisco) "Bill Beckers new book provides a practical and intelligent guide for those who want to help organizations become better at doing what they are trying to do." (Nancy Brown, Consultant to Organizations) "An excellent book! Its really good stuff! Bills approaches to various topics and ways of describing them are really useful. The books organization is also superb." (Donna Deeprose, Author, Speaker, Trainer) "The book validates a lot of what I do and I definitely learned some things about organization/structure and conceptual/operational how tos"...It sparks my creative juices, and is a catalyst for new ahas relative to consulting models, theories, and concepts that OD practitioners may not have access to in one book." (Karen Massoni, OD Consultant and Professor of Organizational Dynamics at The New School) "This book has something to add to the practice of OD, especially since it pulls so many theoretical strands together, socio-technical systems, chaos theory, expectancy-valence theory, large group change, specific future search processes, and situational leadership." (Victor Rhodd, OD and Employee Development Consultant, New York Power Authority) "It reads like a combination diary and practitioners tool kit by weaving in and out of personal views and some really good case examples." (George Truel, Author and OD Practitioner) "If you are going to read this book-and I strongly recommend you do....Beckers book is not a theoretical work. It is about the experience of OD, about the essential conditions that must be adhered to in order to do it profesionally, and about some of the mechanisms and guideposts that can be helpful in navigating through the huge complexity of a large-scale organizational change....it is worth reading. (Robin Stuart-Kotze,PhD., International Management Consultant and Professor)

Organisations private and public operate in an increasingly uncertain landscape, in which they are confronted with challenges they might not be ready to face. They desperately need the engaged minds of their workforces. The evidence, however, suggests that for the most part they don't have that. There is an urgent need to address the high cost of low trust and employee disengagement. Revealing a new approach centred on redefining what we mean by 'management' and 'business', and that it is a collective form of learning that binds them together and facilitates sustained high performance, Donal Carroll examines high performing organisations to uncover how they have built trust, managed value, adopted new types of business model and successfully engaged in collective learning. The new management model is about retaining control by giving it away, more accountable self-management, a new professionalism, and about framing organisation as the basic unit of purpose rather than management itself. Next, new business models are examined more suited to complex, internet-enabled markets that allow greater choice, but which need organizational alertness to what works. Thirdly, learning is considered, with a focus on moving from organisational learning to productive interference sustaining action-based learning that thrives on 'mess' in an open, trusting, democratic climate. The author provides tools and techniques enabling organisations to measure creativity and innovation and to undertake self-assessment of their position in relation to the new management, business and learning models, as well as guidance on energising change initiatives, self-leading and accountability. Practicing managers, change leaders, coaches and consultants, as well as business scholars and researchers, will find much that is useful in this book.

Live to Tell Again is the second book in this series that explores the art and craft of storytelling. This volume explores storytelling as a means to discover meaning and purpose in one's life, using moments in which difficult decisions are made as material for generating powerful personal stories. One story even highlights the potential for storytelling to aid in the process of healing after a tragic event. The October fires of 2017 in Santa Rosa devastated a community. Live to Tell Again captures some of the stories told at a live event the author hosted called "Thicker Than Smoke," weaving them together in a way that reveals not only the personal loss suffered by the storytellers but also the hope, dignity, and humor that are helping to heal and renew the community. Live to Tell Again provides excellent opportunities to study the structure and development of personal narrative, as well as a unique and lively manner of learning spoken English.

In 1944, Albania erupted in civil war. The communist party prevailed and acted quickly and brutally. By 1946, through executions, imprisonments, and mass banishments, the communists broke the back of Albania's freedom. A young Franciscan Catholic and man of heroic character in this time of inhumanity, Friar Zef Pllumi was arrested, brutally tortured, imprisoned, and sent to labor camps. Through deeply personal descriptions of shocking atrocities, Fr. Pllumi focuses on his extraordinary will to survive and his powerful faith. His intense desire to "live to tell" honors those martyred with Christ's name on their lips. Fr. Pllumi was initially released in 1949. Fr. Pllumi's memories are a brave confrontation of communism. His story's power lays in the fact that despite obscene efforts, the communist party could not succeed. As Fr. Pllumi states, "They think people are frightened before dying, but what they don't realize is that when you've arrived to a certain agonizing point, nothing is frightening anymore." Fr. Pllumi's historical memoir also delivers clear lessons for today. Amid the many horrors, differences in beliefs melted away. Christians, Muslims, Albanians, Italians, and French alike, although wounded physically, emotionally, and spiritually, were still alive to help each other and stand together and triumph for mankind.

“A suspenseful roller-coaster ride.”—Karin Slaughter • “Lisa Gardner always delivers heart-stopping suspense.”—Harlan Coben He knows everything about you—including the first place you’ll hide. On a warm summer night in one of Boston’s working-class neighborhoods, an unthinkable crime has been committed: Four members of a family have been brutally murdered. The father—and possible suspect—now lies clinging to life in the ICU. Murder-suicide? Or something worse? Veteran police detective D. D. Warren is certain of only one thing: There’s more to this case than meets the eye. Danielle Burton is a survivor, a dedicated nurse whose passion is to help children at a locked-down pediatric psych ward. But she remains haunted by a family tragedy that shattered her life nearly twenty-five years ago. The dark anniversary is approaching, and when D. D. Warren and her partner show up at the facility, Danielle immediately realizes: It has started again. A devoted mother, Victoria Oliver has a hard time remembering what normalcy is like. But she will do anything to ensure that her troubled son has some semblance of a childhood. She will love him no matter what. Nurture him. Keep him safe. Protect him. Even when the threat comes from within her own house. The lives of these three women unfold and connect in unexpected ways, as sins from the past emerge—and stunning secrets reveal just how tightly blood ties can bind. Sometimes the most devastating crimes are the ones closest to home.

Live, Listen, Tell: The Art of Preaching will guide readers through the process of sermon preparation and hearing God through the Scriptures. By drawing on life and Scripture, especially the road to Emmaus narrative in Luke 24, the author illustrates that preachers are living a story, listening to a story and telling a story. This book encourages you to pay particular attention, through prayer, to the story to which you are listening. Geoff New shows how to prayerfully listen to the Scriptures in preaching preparation and how the fruit of this leads to a sermon – and impacts the way we live, listen and tell.

What makes a man masculine? A woman feminine? Did God design the two genders so differently? If so, why? The answers to these questions will free women and men to gladly embrace all that it means to be fully alive as gendered bearers of God's image who can profoundly impact others for good by the way they relate. Author and psychologist Dr. Larry Crabb presents a biblically grounded understanding of gender uniqueness. His illustration of a bridge of connection shows how the two genders can relationally come together in God-revealing harmony as they celebrate their God-designed uniqueness. Readers will discover that God created male and female to relate in gender-specific ways to make a difference in others by displaying God's relational character. Crabb clearly shows men and women what it means to live fully alive as feminine women and masculine men.
