Free online Machine Translation (MT) is known to provide instant access to information in multiple language pairs. This is why MT has proved to be extremely useful in various spoken and written text applications in reducing language barriers and facilitating cross-lingual information search as well as commerce and communication. The first chapter of this book explores the connections between free online Machine Translation, mobile learning via a wide array of easily accessible apps, and the future of language learning as we know it. Chapter two describes the use of the Web as a content generator for experimenting with human-machine language interaction. Chapter three provides issues and strategies for multilingual text processing in the domain of international affairs. Chapter four introduces several machine vision-based methods for measuring the cross-sectional geometric parameters of microdrills and their comparisons. Chapter five mainly serves to introduce the research into, and the development and application of, machine translation technology at research institutes and universities in China. The last chapter analyses existing systems, extracts the relevant information from an interaction point of view, and proposes and describes interaction abstractions for public displays.

Machine translation has become increasingly popular, especially with the introduction of neural machine translation in major online translation systems. However, despite the rapid advances in machine translation, the role of a human translator remains crucial. As illustrated by the chapters in this book, man-machine interaction is essential in machine translation, localisation, terminology management, and crowdsourcing translation. In fact, the importance of a human translator before, during, and after machine processing, cannot be overemphasised as human intervention is the best way to ensure the translation quality of machine translation. This volume explores the role of a human translator in machine translation from various perspectives, affording a comprehensive look at this topical research area. This book is essential reading for anyone involved in translation studies, machine translation or interested in translation technology.

With the advance of speech, image and video technology, human–computer interaction (HCI) will reach a new phase. In recent years, HCI has been extended to human–machine communication (HMC) and the perceptual user interface (PUI). The final goal in HMC is that the communication between humans and machines is similar to human-to-human communication. Moreover, the machine can support human-to-human communication (e.g. an interface for the disabled). For this reason, various aspects of human communication are to be considered in HMC. The HMC interface, called a multimodal interface, includes different types of input methods, such as natural language, gestures, face and handwriting characters. The nine papers in this book have been selected from the 92 high-quality papers constituting the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Multimodal Interface (ICMI '99), which was held in Hong Kong in 1999. The papers cover a wide spectrum of the multimodal interface.
