Abstract: A report of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger concludes that U.S. efforts to alleviate hunger are necessary, both to national security and to global peace. The Commission's major recommendation is that the U.S. government make the elimination of world hunger the primary focus of its relations with developing countries; this entails a reordering of national priorities. An analysis of the causes and future implications of world hunger suggests that its elimination will require a combination of approaches and substantial resources. Strong American development-assistance activities, (both short- and long-term) are needed to achieve an adequate world food supply. Actions to improve the international economic setting and combat hunger involve trade, debt, corporate involvement, and world food security policies. Domestic hunger and malnutrition are also addressed. Nutrition surveillance, continued support of domestic food programs, and public education are recommended methods for overcoming hunger at home. Brazil has a long tradition of public policies and efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty. The right to food is enshrined in Amendment No. 64/2010 of Brazil’s Constitution as an obligation of the State, and the country has a very progressive food security law that institutionalizes the policy and lays the foundations for broad-based social participation in priority setting, expressed in the National Council on Food and Nutrition Security (CONSEA). It was this wealth of experience (reflected in programmes and plans such as Zero Hunger, Bolsa Família and Brazil Without Extreme Poverty, applied nationwide from 2003 to 2013), together with other factors, that took the country off the Hunger Map in 2014. This report is designed to update the information and describe concrete Brazilian initiatives to facilitate South-South cooperation to a wider audience, including policymakers working to improve food security and fight poverty. In other words, it is a manual of good practice for public au thorities, technical personnel, NGOs and the general public in other Latin American, Caribbean and African countries

Wang recounts three episodes of extreme hardship in his life: incarceration in a Guomindang jail during the 1930s for his communist activism, on the run from Japanese troops during the 1940s in a bleak part of Shandong Province, and imprisonment as a "rightist" in Shanghai during the 1960s cultural revolution. The central theme of the three stories is extreme deprivation and "Hunger."
