Mr. Currie discusses how it can be difficult to share the reasons he believes in God, which is what motivated him to write this book. The main thesis is that it makes as much sense scientifically and logically to believe in God as to not believe. He accepts that you may disagree with his choice, but hopes you will consider that belief is not necessarily a delusion or something that ruins everything. With some discussion about what we mean by belief and God, he presents the reasons and evidence that support his belief. Some reasons to believe are based on things he doesn't believe. He doesn't believe that nothing produces something, that matter has always existed, or that intelligence, consciousness, emotions and a sense of morality arose from inanimate matter. He believes that there is evidence of design in creation and life that points to God. These things require an autonomous, intelligent, external to our time and space entity, God. He also believes that the arguments against God are not adequate to negate the plausibility of sensible belief. He believes in free will. A person can choose to believe or not. Either choice is based on a person's understanding of the evidence along with faith.

Growing up, all my friends would have described my family as a Christian family. I assumed all my friends were Christians as well. We all believed in God. We occasionally attended church. We were good people. Even though we believed in God, we didn’t know his word, didn’t understand the gospel, and didn’t pursue his will. We believed in God, but we lived as if he didn’t exist. After pastoring for eighteen years, I’ve noticed a large percentage of people in my church living similar lives. Some seem to be Christian in name only without a lot of visible spiritual fruit. Others boldly claim Christ is Lord while living lives diametrically opposed to the teachings in scripture. The more I looked, the more I found Christian Atheists everywhere. While it is often easy to spot the hypocrisy in others, it is generally more difficult to see in the mirror. One day in an honest moment, I painfully admitted that although I unquestionably believed in God, I was leading the church as if he didn’t exist. I wrongly depended more on my own abilities than on his Spirit. Sadly, I dangerously cared more what people thought about me than what God thought about me. And although I preached about putting your whole faith in God, I still lived as if everything was up to me.The book Christian Atheism reflects my personal journey toward a more authentic God-honoring life.

How to be yourself at a party where you don’t know anyone? (Does the self exist?) Why does Grandma put a cap and a plaid sweater on her Yorkie? (Do animals have a reason?) How could I have stayed with such a stupid guy for so long? (Do we only desire things that we consider good?) When we hear “philosophy,” we sometimes think of incomprehensible or boring books. The very names of the authors are unpronounceable: Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger. Living or dead, they often look like zombies. They are in their own world and use words that we do not always understand, like “idiosyncrasy,” “ontological,” or “transcendental.” In this book, we hope to remove these prejudices. Philosophy is not boring; it allows us to understand complex things in a simple way, and therefore it is never far from everyday life. It speaks to everyone. It is for everyone. Born in 1974, from Rouen, Gilles Vervisch is a teacher and a professor of philosophy.
