In Our Own Words

Written by a diverse group of younger women religious from North America, In Our Own Words offers a collection of essays on issues central to apostolic religious life today. The thirteen authors represent different congregations, charisms, ministries, and histories. The topics and concerns that shape these chapters emerged naturally through a collaborative process of prayer and conversation. Essays focus on the vows and community life, individual identity and congregational charisms, and leadership among younger members leading into the future. The authors hope these chapters may form a springboard for further conversation on religious life, inviting others to share their experiences of religious life in today’s world.

Letters, postcards, notes and telegraphs from the great and the good, the notorious and the downright wicked, shine a spotlight on a range of historical events and movements providing an immediate link to the immediate and much more distant past. The book includes letters from: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mikhail Gorbachev, Lucien Freud, Barbara Hepworth, Nelson Mandela, Caitlin Thomas, Mary Whitehouse, Gandhi, George Washington among many others. Subjects covered include suffragette disturbances, obscene publications, relations between international leaders, child emigration including the Kindertransport. The book features 55 letters, each with a 600-word essay, and a 3000 word introduction. There are 150 images in the book: 55 of the letters themselves, and a further 95 supplementary images.

In Our Own Words takes the unique approach of using student writing as a resource for writing instruction and idea development. The Teacher's Manual clearly articulates the guiding principles on which the Student's Book is based. The book also provides helpful teaching suggestions and tips. Answers for select activities in the Student's Book are given.

For most Norwegians in the nineteenth century, America was a remote and exotic place until the first immigrants began to write home. Their letters were among the most valuable, accessible, and reliable sources of information about the new world and the journey to it. For many immigrants, writing letters home was their most cherished opportunity to communicate their thoughts and feelings in their native language. Through vivid translations of letters written to family and friends between 1870 and 1945, In Their Own Words traces the stories of nine Norwegian immigrants: farmer, fisherman, gold miner, politician, unmarried mother, housewife, businessman, railroad worker, contractor. Their common bond was the experience of immigration and acculturation, but their individual experiences were manifested in a wide variety of forms. Solveig Zempel has thoughtfully selected and translated letters rich in personal description and observation to present each writer’s subjective view of historical events. Often focusing on the minutiae of daily life and the feelings of the individual immigrant, the letters form a complex, intimate, and colorful mosaic of the immigrant world. Solveig Zempel is chair of the Norwegian Department at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

The Venezuelan experiment in democratic socialism was the talk of the liberal elite in America-until it wasn't.The consolidation of power by China's Xi Jinping, China's positions on Taiwan, its aggressive stance on continued economic freedom in Hong Kong, and a resurgence of China's relationship with Cuba and South America are intended to further its global ambitions.The development of relationships with the ayatollahs who rule Iran proves the importance of international solidarity in furthering the ideology of communism. Russia, China, Cuba, and Iran are the modern version of President Ronald Reagan's "axis of evil," from the 1980s. They are looking to establish a home base inside the United States. Communism, Marxism, globalism, have resurrected and reinvented themselves in the pursuit of absolute power. Just like the 1980's, America is the primary target.
