Excerpt from Industrial Education in Wilmington, Delaware: Report of a Survey Made Under the Direction of the Commissioner of Education With the exception of Rhode Island, Delaware is the smallest State in the Union. With an area of square miles, it is twice as large as Rhode Island. Outside of the city of Wilmington, the interests of the State are almost exclusively rural and agricultural. Wilmington, the metropolis of Delaware, is located in New Castle County, on the Delaware River, at the junction of the Christiana and Brandywine Rivers. Its area is square miles, and it has 5 miles of frontage on the Delaware River. The population of Wilmington was in 1910, or per cent of the total population of the State, and it was the only city in the State having a population of more than From 1900 to 1910 the population of the city increased per cent. Since 1910 the increase in population has been much more rapid. Wilmington is situated midway between New York and Washing ton, 27 miles from Philadelphia, and 69 miles from Baltimore. Excellent transportation facilities are provided by three railroads, three interurban trolley lines, and freight and passenger steamship lines.
