Industry As A Partner For Sustainable Development

In February 2001 UNEP, in partnership with a variety of industry associations and organizations launched a reporting initiative to gauge progress by the private sector towards sustainable development. This effort contributes to the wider review of progress with the implementation of Agenda 21, under the framework of the World Summit on Sustainable Development. These volumes present sectoral reports on the progress towards sustainable development.

A compilation of global sustainability reports developed by 22 industry sectors.

Since the 1992 World Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the waste management industry has made significant technological and managerial contributions to the protection of the environment. This document summarizes contributions from a number of International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) national members. It clearly shows the significant change of the role of waste management from dealing with wastes to the new task of managing our society's metabolism.

Through a multi-stakeholder process facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and as a contribution to the World Summit on Sustainable Development, 22 industry sectors have developed global sustainability reports. It is the first time that business and industry have formed a partnership with the United Nations in consultation with labor and non-governmental organizations to report on sector-specific progress in implementing Agenda 21 on a global scale. This publication provides an overview of the industry achievements and unfinished business in implementing Agenda 21, and identifies key gaps and stakeholder concerns, summarizes industry-specific challenges, goals and commitments, and provides recommendations on the way forward.
