The U.S. information technology (IT) research and development (R&D) ecosystem was the envy of the world in 1995. However, this position of leadership is not a birthright, and it is now under pressure. In recent years, the rapid globalization of markets, labor pools, and capital flows have encouraged many strong national competitors. During the same period, national policies have not sufficiently buttressed the ecosystem, or have generated side effects that have reduced its effectiveness. As a result, the U.S. position in IT leadership today has materially eroded compared with that of prior decades, and the nation risks ceding IT leadership to other nations within a generation. Assessing the Impacts of Changes in the Information Technology R&D Ecosystem calls for a recommitment to providing the resources needed to fuel U.S. IT innovation, to removing important roadblocks that reduce the ecosystem's effectiveness in generating innovation and the fruits of innovation, and to becoming a lead innovator and user of IT. The book examines these issues and makes recommendations to strengthen the U.S. IT R&D ecosystem.

Information technology (IT) is widely understood to be the enabling technology of the 21st century. IT has transformed, and continues to transform, all aspects of our lives: commerce and finance, education, employment, energy, health care, manufacturing, government, national security, transportation, communications, entertainment, science, and engineering. IT and its impact on the U.S. economy-both directly (the IT sector itself) and indirectly (other sectors that are powered by advances in IT)-continue to grow in size and importance. In 1995, the National Research Council's Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) produced the report Evolving the High Performance Computing and Communications Initiative to Support the Nation's Information Infrastructure. A graphic in that report, often called the "tire tracks" diagram because of its appearance, produced an extraordinary response by clearly linking government investments in academic and industry research to the ultimate creation of new information technology industries with more than $1 billion in annual revenue. Used in presentations to Congress and executive branch decision makers and discussed broadly in the research and innovation policy communities, the tire tracks figure dispelled the assumption that the commercially successful IT industry is self-sufficient, underscoring through long incubation periods of years and even decades. The figure was updated in 2002, 2003, and 2009 reports produced by the CSTB. With the support of the National Science Foundation, CSTB updated the tire tracks figure. Continuing Innovation in Information Technology includes the updated figure and a brief text based in large part on prior CSTB reports.

In 1972, the National Science Foundation sponsored an historic colloquium on research and development and economic growth/productivity. At that time, the entire field of inquiry was in its infancy. Since then, a great deal of research has been devoted to the subject. This authoritative volume revisits the themes of the original conference and summarizes the contributions of research to the economy and society since that time.

This book considers how the fundamental issues relating to the use of information technology in education, are being tackled across the world. Significantly it features international perspectives on the challenge that information and communications technology poses to teacher education; views of trainee teacher experiences with computers; insights into the ways in which communication technologies are being used to link teachers and students; consideration of the impact of change with information and communications technology; discussion of the roles of those involved in developing teacher education with information and communications techology at national, institutional and teacher levels. It contains the selected proceedings of the International Conference on Information technology: Supporting change through teacher education, sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing, and held at Kiryat Anavim, Israel, in June/July 1996.

This book represents the compilation of papers presented at the IFIP Working Group 8. 2 conference entitled “Information Technology in the Service Economy: Challenges st and Possibilities for the 21 Century. ” The conference took place at Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada, on August 10 13, 2008. Par ticipation in the conference spanned the continents from Asia to Europe with paper submissions global in focus as well. Conference submissions included complete d research papers and research in progress reports. Papers submitted to the conference went through a double blind review process in which the program co chairs, an associate editor, and reviewers provided assessments and recommendations. The editor ial efforts of the associate editors and reviewers in this process were outstanding. To foster high quality research publications in this field of study, authors of accepted pape rs were then invited to revise and resubmit their work. Through this rigorous review and revision process, 12 completed research papers and 11 research in progress reports were accepted for presentation and publica tion. Paper workshop sessions were also esta blished to provide authors of emergent work an opportunity to receive feedback fromthe IF IP 8. 2 community. Abstracts of these new projects are included in this volume. Four panels were presented at the conference to provide discussion forums for the varied aspect s of IT, service, and globalization. Panel abstracts are also included here.

This two-volume-set constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Future Information Technology, FutureTech 2011, held in Crete, Greece, in June 2011. The 123 revised full papers presented in both volumes were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on future information technology, IT service and cloud computing; social computing, network, and services; forensics for future generation communication environments; intelligent transportation systems and applications; multimedia and semantic technologies; information science and technology.

This volume contains some research papers from the International Conference on Information Technology and Management organized by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, in conjunction with the Institute of Systems Management (ISM). It comprises 30 selected and refereed papers in the development of enabling technologies, electronic commerce and knowledge management, and IT systems and applications. These papers feature the results of the latest research in the areas of information systems, enabling technologies, and business management, as well as potential applications in industries including education, finance, logistics, medical tourism, and IT services.
