Excerpt from Insects and Diseases of Trees in the South This publication has been prepared to assist forest managers and home-owners in identifying pests of southern trees. The insects and diseases discussed are thet more common ones attacking forest and ornamental trees. Prompt identification and treatment of these pests may mean the difference between losing or saving a valuable shade tree. Underlying all successful forest and ornamental pest control efforts, however, is the necessity to keep trees in a healthy, vigorous condition. Chemical supression recommendations are not included in this publication. For pesticide information contact the local State or Federal extension forester, entomologist, or pathologist. Excerpt from The Diseases and Pests of the Rubber Tree In 1911 the diseases which were known to attack the rubber tree were described in The Physiology and Diseases of Hevea brasiliensis. The number of recorded diseases was then comparatively small, and it was possible to include with them a general account of the structure and physiology of the tree, and a summary of those tapping experiments which promised to afford a foundation for a theory of rubber tapping. That book has now been out of print for some time, and several inquirers have suggested the issue of a second edition. But the number of known diseases of Hevea has, unfortunately, been considerably extended during the last eight years, while the work of numerous investigators in this field has added largely to our knowledge of both old and new ones. Consequently, rubber diseases now demand a volume to themselves; and it has therefore been decided to divide the subject-matter of the former book, and to publish a separate account, revised and brought up to date, of the diseases and pests only. It is hoped that it will be possible, at some future date, to deal similarly with the other half of the original volume. As the book is intended primarily for the rubber planter, technical botanical details have been avoided as much as possible. It is not practicable to exclude them altogether, nor, indeed, is that necessary, for rubber cultivation has made the planter familiar with technical botanical terms to a degree hitherto unknown in tropical agriculture. Excerpt from The Forest Insect and Disease Situation: Lake States, 1958 The forest disease Situation, unlike that of forest insects, does not as a rule change rapidly from year to year. The overall disease situationin the region was described in the 1956 report.3/ In the present report, as in that for 1957, attention is limited to marked changes in prevalence of diseases and to new diseases that attracted attention during the year. Red pine root rot appeared in one of the three nurseries that suffered from black spruce root rot in 1957. A 50 - percent loss occurred in one compartment as a result of this disease. Excerpt from Forest Insects and Diseases in the Northern Great Plains: A Survey There is no doubt that white grubs can cause considerable damage to seedlings and transplants. The problem is and has been most important in the nursery, but occasionally newly planted shelter belts and' ornamentals may be injured. This is particularly true when old sodded areas are planted.considered free from damage; all the others had at least some injury from pests, other animals, or environmental factors. Excerpt from Insects Affecting Park and Woodland Trees This work was begun a number of years ago by the writer studying various insects depredating on shade trees, and from that it was very natural to give attention to those affecting forest trees. It assembles in one volume the results Of our studies for a series Of years, together with a summary Of the more important literature relating to the subject. It is not expected that this memoir will supersede the exceedingly valuable work by Dr Packard on Forest and S/um'e Tree Insects, sth Report Of the United States Entomological Commission, but rather that it will be supplementary thereto. It is hoped that the arrangement adopted will facilitate the identi fication Of the different species and aid materially in making the information accessible to the general public. The writer at this time wishes to acknowl edge his indebtedness to the assistants who have been associated with him during the past six years, all of whom have aided more or less in the preparation Of this work. Particular mention should be made Of the work of Mr D. B. Young, now assistant entomologist, who during the last three years, by collecting and otherwise, has secured much valuable data which has been incorporated in this work. Through the courtesy Of Dr L. 0. Howard, Chief of the Bureau Of Entomology, United States Department Of Agriculture, a number Of species were kindly determined by Drs Hop kins and Ashmead. The former named most Of the bark borers or Scoly tids and also generously gave the writer the benefit Of his extended experience in the study Of forest insects. Dr Ashmead is responsible for the determination Of most-of the parasitic Hymenoptera, a group in which he is a well recognized authority. The value Of the work is also greatly enhanced by the large series Of original drawings by Mr L. H. Joutel Of New York.
