Interactive Learning Through Visualization

This book contains a selection of papers presented at the Computer Graphics and Education '91 Conference, held from 4th to 6th Apri11991, in Begur, Spain. The conference was organised under the auspices of the International Federation for Information Processing (IPIP) Working Group 5.10 on Computer Graphics. The goal of the organisers was to take a forward look at the impact on education of anticipated developments in graphics and related technologies, such as multimedia, in the next five years. We felt that at a time when many educational establishments are facing financial stringency and when major changes are taking place in patterns of education and training, this could be valuable for both educators and companies developing the technology: for educators, because they are often too bogged down in day-to-day problems to undertake adequate forward planning, and for companies, to see some of the problems faced by educators and to see what their future requirements might be.

This volume tackles issues arising from today’s high reliance on learning from visualizations in general and dynamic visualizations in particular at all levels of education. It reflects recent changes in educational practice through which text no longer occupies its traditionally dominant role as the prime means of presenting to-be-learned information to learners. Specifically, the book targets the dynamic visual components of multimedia educational resources and singles out how they can influence learning in their own right. It aims to help bridge the increasing gap between pervasive adoption of dynamic visualizations in educational practice and our limited understanding of the role that these representations can play in learning. The volume has recruited international leaders in the field to provide diverse perspectives on the dynamic visualizations and learning. It is the first comprehensive book on the topic that brings together contributions from both renowned researchers and expert practitioners. Rather than aiming to present a broad general overview of the field, it focuses on innovative work that is at the cutting edge. As well as further developing and complementing existing approaches, the contributions emphasize fresh ideas that may challenge existing orthodoxies and point towards future directions for the field. Interactive visualization is emerging as a vibrant new form of communication, providing compelling presentations that allow viewers to interact directly with information in order to construct their own understandings of it. Building on a long tradition of print-based information visualization, interactive visualization utilizes the technological capabilities of computers, the Internet, and computer graphics to marshal multifaceted information in the service of making a point visually. This text looks at the development and reusability of multimedia content in web-based learning systems. The author discusses the development of a component-based framework that enables developers to employ reusable software components enhanced with metadata. The text contains complete instructional visualizations in a rich learning context. Two activities for making stand-alone visualizations group-aware are addressed. No other work has addressed the issue of transparent collaboration based on instructional visualizations enhanced with metadata in such a way.
