The aptitude to write well is increasingly becoming a vital element that students need to succeed in college and their future careers. Students must be equipped with competent writing skills as colleges and jobs base the acceptance of students and workers on the quality of their writing. Situated among fields (applied linguistics, creative writing studies, writing studies), this book empirically explores the language of writers in contexts of learning externalized in literary genres. At its core, this book features linguistic and thematic analysis of the writing and reflections of adults who experienced what they usually described as meaningful CW in university coursework, sometimes in science and research-focused courses where they might not have expected to compose a literary genre. In addition to synthesizing empirical studies that in total included more than 3,500 participants, chapters present new research involving about 400 more. This book is meant to be substantial in its goal of systematically organizing what is known about CW’s relationship to writers: in terms of feelings of engagement, gains in content knowledge, and revelations about oneself and others.

This book contributes to the innovation of writing education and research globally by providing crucial insights into how the structures and aims of literacy curricula vary internationally. It examines how nine education systems across five continents represent ‘good writing’ in curricula that shape students’ experiences learning to write in school. The book presents curricular analyses aimed at providing insight into how writing development can be better supported through innovative policy and research. The findings regarding international variation are presented under three broad dimensions: social and contextual factors that shape writing curricula; the discourses of writing reflected in curricula and official documents; and hallmarks of classroom practice, including the relationship with official discourse. Case study chapters present integrated inductive and deductive document analyses, findings of which are compared in a concluding, cross-case analysis chapter. This book equips pre-service teachers, research postgraduate students, teacher educators, and language specialists with specific knowledge and skills about the principles, research, and applications of digital portfolios within the EFL writing contexts. While most digital portfolio scholarship focuses on higher education, this book targets primary-level and secondary-level school audiences, namely pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and Ministry of Education staff members with a focus on EFL writing. The rationale behind this design is that the published literature on digital portfolios tends to be generic and one-size-fits-all; there has been scant published scholarship about the development of digital portfolio literacy among teachers and pupils, which could enable them to upgrade the teaching and learning of writing in a larger EFL environment. This volume fills this gap by illustrating the why, what, and how aspects of digital portfolios in ten reader-friendly chapters. Guiding educators to enrich their pedagogical repertoire via the portfolio approach, this book emphasises a healthy balance between principles, research, and practice.
