Introduction To Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands is a small island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. It is composed of 29 coral atolls and 5 islands, and covers a total land area of just over 70 square miles. Despite its small size, the Marshall Islands has a rich history and played a significant role in global events during the 20th century. The islands were first inhabited by indigenous people over 2,000 years ago, and were later colonized by Spain, Germany, and Japan. During World War II, the Marshall Islands were the site of several major battles between the United States and Japan, including the notorious Battle of Kwajalein. After the war, the islands became a trust territory of the United States, and in 1986 they gained full independence as the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Today, the Marshall Islands is a democracy with a unique culture and a strong connection to the ocean that surrounds it.

This book is an attempt to ensure that traditional knowledge is not lost and that ecosystems are protected for future generations. It describes more than 270 traditional medicinal treatments, all of which use the plants of the Marshall Islands, and provides a biogeographical, historical and anthropological context, with a particular focus on the use of traditional medicine for the treatment of women.

This Selected Issues paper discusses correspondent banking relationships (CBRs) pressures on the Republic of the Marshall Island (RMI). RMI’s two banks currently have access to the US financial system. The Bank of the Marshall Islands is a domestic financial institution providing banking services to a substantial portion of the population and operates five branches throughout RMI, including on the Kwajalein Atoll. RMI, through the Trust Company of the Marshall Islands, provides offshore corporate and maritime registry services. Weak implementation of the anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) framework by the authorities contributes to CBR pressures in RMI. The termination of BOMI’s CBR with First Hawaiian Bank would be expected to have significant negative economic repercussions without alternative arrangements. The RMI authorities are strengthening the effectiveness of the AML/CFT framework. Additional steps should be taken to further lower the risk of losing the last US dollar CBR. Once the national risk assessment is completed, an action plan should be developed to address the identified risks.

Following the capture of Tarawa in November 1943, American eyes turned to the Marshall Islands. These were the next vital stepping-stone across the Pacific towards Japan, and would bring the islands of Guam and Saipan within the reach of US forces. In their first amphibious attack, the new 4th Marine Division landed on Roi and Namur islands on 1 February 1944, while US 7th Division landed on Kwajalein. At the time this was the longest shore-to-shore amphibious assault in history. The lessons of the bloody fighting on Tarawa had been well learned and the successful attack on the Marshalls set the pattern for future amphibious operations in the Pacific War.
