Iodine is a naturally occurring element and inorganic iodines found in the ocean accumulate in fish, shellfish and seaweed. Industrially iodine is used in many applications including the manufacture of inks, dyes, photographic agents and in water-purification. In the health-care industry, iodine is widely used as a disinfectant/biocide and in the production of soaps, bandages, and medicines. Iodine is also included as a salt in some countries to provide dietary supplementation. This Concise International Chemical Assessment Document (CICAD) evaluates the scientific literature on the health aspects of iodine and inorganic iodides. Its focus is on the health effects from environmental exposures beyond those associated with the diet and nutritional supplementation. Radioactive iodine isotopes are regarded as outside the scope of the document.

Abstract: Dietary iodine consumption by Americans has increased to the degree that intakes exceed recommended levels. A review of the scientific literature and opinions of allergists, dermatologists, and endocrinologists concludes, however, that adverse reactions to iodine in foods are not a significant public health problem. Current reports fail to demonstrate increased prevalence of iodine toxicity, hypersensitivity, or iodine related thyroid disease. Adverse reactions to iodine in foods or food supplements (iodized salt) are uncommon; these cases are mostly manifested as acne and iododerma. Some evidence exists to support a haptenic effect (provoking an immune response) of iodine and iodide; laboratory tests for diagnosing iodine hypersensitivity are needed to confirm this idea. Iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis may result from ingestion of excess iodine by susceptible individuals. Thus, clinical awareness of this potential hazard and periodic evaluation of the amount of iodine in the American diet are needed. (nm).

The Chemistry of Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine and Astatine is a special edition that contains selected sections and addresses the needs of specialists in their respective fields. The text describes the general atomic properties of non-metals, particularly the halogens, as being the perfect series to study, both in physical and chemical terms. The book explains that the combination of the atomic properties implies excellent electronegativity values for the halogen atoms. The text also cites some behavior characteristics of halogens that are irregular, such as chlorine and bromine are similar but differ from fluorine on one side and iodine on the other. The book also compares the general methods of producing chlorine, bromine, or iodine by 1) oxidation of halide derivatives or 2) reduction of compounds of the halogens in positive oxidation states. The text then reviews the application of a complex valence theory that raises difficult questions about the bonding in halogen-oxygen molecules. The book also explains the biological behavior of astatine that accumulates in the liver or in the thyroid gland depending on the method of administration either as a radiocolloid or as a true solution. The book is suitable for molecular biologists and researchers, molecular chemists, and medical researchers.
