Irregularities Of Distribution

This book is an authoritative description of the various approaches to and methods in the theory of irregularities of distribution. The subject is primarily concerned with number theory, but also borders on combinatorics and probability theory. The work is in three parts. The first is concerned with the classical problem, complemented where appropriate with more recent results. In the second part, the authors study generalizations of the classical problem, pioneered by Schmidt. Here, they include chapters on the integral equation method of Schmidt and the more recent Fourier transform technique. The final part is devoted to Roth's '1/4-theorem'.

This volume presents research and expository papers highlighting the vibrant and fascinating study of irregularities in the distribution of primes. Written by an international group of experts, contributions present a self-contained yet unified exploration of a rapidly progressing area. Emphasis is given to the research inspired by Maier’s matrix method, which established a newfound understanding of the distribution of primes. Additionally, the book provides an historical overview of a large body of research in analytic number theory and approximation theory. The papers published within are intended as reference tools for graduate students and researchers in mathematics.

Handbook of Combinatorics

Lattice rules are a powerful and popular form of quasi-Monte Carlo rules based on multidimensional integration lattices. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the subject with detailed explanations of the basic concepts and the current methods used in research. This comprises, for example, error analysis in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, fast component-by-component constructions, the curse of dimensionality and tractability, weighted integration and approximation problems, and applications of lattice rules.

The first extensive phase scintillation measurements during both over-and underdense heating are described. The data were collected from an aircraft, and by making repeated scans in the vicinity of the heated volume, the overall spatial distribution of intermediate-scale irregularities has been established. During overdense heating, the irregularities maximize in strength near the HF reflection height, but also map downward at least 100 km with only moderate weakening. From the relative frequency shifts of the phase spectra measured for different directions of aircraft motion, the irregularity anisotropy and drift have also been estimated. The change in phase spectra shape between 6.2 MHz and 9.9 MHz overdose heating is consistent with thermal self-focusing irregularity generation. Underdense heating produces a different phase spectral signature than is theoretically predicted, although enhanced energy does occur at scintillation producing scale sizes.

Recent Advances in Harmonic Analysis and Applications features selected contributions from the AMS conference which took place at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro in 2011 in honor of Professor Konstantin Oskolkov's 65th birthday. The contributions are based on two special sessions, namely "Harmonic Analysis and Applications" and "Sparse Data Representations and Applications." Topics covered range from Banach space geometry to classical harmonic analysis and partial differential equations. Survey and expository articles by leading experts in their corresponding fields are included, and the volume also features selected high quality papers exploring new results and trends in Muckenhoupt-Sawyer theory, orthogonal polynomials, trigonometric series, approximation theory, Bellman functions and applications in differential equations. Graduate students and researchers in analysis will be particularly interested in the articles which emphasize remarkable connections between analysis and analytic number theory. The readers will learn about recent mathematical developments and directions for future work in the unexpected and surprising interaction between abstract problems in additive number theory and experimentally discovered optical phenomena in physics. This book will be useful for number theorists, harmonic analysts, algorithmists in multi-dimensional signal processing and experts in physics and partial differential equations.

A conference on Analytic Number Theory and Diophantine Problems was held from June 24 to July 3, 1984 at the Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. The conference was funded by the National Science Foundation, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University. The papers in this volume represent only a portion of the many talks given at the conference. The principal speakers were Professors E. Bombieri, P. X. Gallagher, D. Goldfeld, S. Graham, R. Greenberg, H. Halberstam, C. Hooley, H. Iwaniec, D. J. Lewis, D. W. Masser, H. L. Montgomery, A. Selberg, and R. C. Vaughan. Of these, Professors Bombieri, Goldfeld, Masser, and Vaughan gave three lectures each, while Professor Hooley gave two. Special sessions were also held and most participants gave talks of at least twenty minutes each. Prof. P. Sarnak was unable to attend but a paper based on his intended talk is included in this volume. We take this opportunity to thank all participants for their (enthusiastic) support for the conference. Judging from the response, it was deemed a success. As for this volume, I take responsibility for any typographical errors that may occur in the final print.
