This book offers an unprecedented look into the field of translation studies (TS) in Brazil, placing emphasis both on the conflict theory vs. practice and on the reception of poststructuralist thought. The implied debate between the voices heard in the book represents a wide-ranging spectrum of viewpoints not only in TS in Brazil, but also in the humanities in general. Addressing issues such as the institutionalisation of translation, the aim of translation theory and translator training, the impact of poststructuralist thought on TS and the role of multilingualism in the area, this work offers an overview of the field of TS today, while proposing new strategies for translators and translation scholars that go beyond the conflicts between theory and practice and between structuralism and poststructuralism.

Marc Orlando looks at the gap between practice and research in Translation & Interpreting Studies and at the way this gap could be bridged. He focuses on the way practice and research can inform each other in the education and training of future translators and interpreters, with the aim of training future professionals both as practitioners and researchers in an educational environment that would marry both vocational and academic elements. It is proposed that promoting the status of practisearchers would help to fill the current gap between practitioners, researchers and Translation & Interpreting educators. This collection seeks to expand the centers from which scholars theorize translation, building on themes in Rosemary Arrojo’s pioneering work on transfiction and the influence of bordering disciplines in investigating and elucidating questions central to the field of translation studies. Chapters by scholars around the world theorize translation from diverse perspectives, drawing on a wide range of literatures, genres, and media, including fiction, philosophy, drama, and film. Half the chapters explore the influence of Rosemary Arrojo’s work on transfiction and the ways in which fictional representations of translators and translation can shed new light on theoretical concerns. The other chapters look to fields outside translation studies, such as linguistics, media studies, and philosophy, to demonstrate the ways in which the key thinkers and theories that have influenced Arrojo’s work can be seen in other disciplines and in turn, encourage further cross-disciplinary research interrogating key questions in the field. The collection makes the case for a multi-layered approach to theorizing translation, one which accounts for the rich possibilities in revisiting existing work and thinking outside disciplinary boundaries in order to advance the field. Interdisciplinarity has been a defining feature of Interpreting Studies from its inception. The present volume comprises a selection of papers by authors from five different European countries; the papers explore the crossroads of various subdisciplines within Interpreting Studies and beyond. The contributions show that, while traditional approaches and combinations with other established disciplines such as sociology, law or linguistics remain common, advances in technology, in particular rapid software development, require that Interpreting Studies must also adapt to and accept a new social reality. Using examples from a range of institutional settings, the authors demonstrate what the effect of these changes has been and will be on the theory, teaching and practice of interpreting.
