This Festschrift for Reinhard Schulze focusses on a life-long concern of his, namely the relationship between Islam and modernity. The contributors reflect upon the academic study of Islam, Islamic cultures of knowledge, media and literature, and current societal processes. Diese Festschrift für Reinhard Schulze widmet sich einem Lebensthema des Jubilars, nämlich der Beziehung von Islam und Moderne. Die Beiträge reflektieren akademische Forschung zu Islam, islamische Wissenskulturen, Medien und Literatur, sowie gegenwärtige Prozesse in nahöstlichen Gesellschaften.

Dynamics of Islam in the Modern World scrutinizes and analyzes Islam in context. It posits Muslims not as independent and autonomous, but as relational and interactive agents of change and continuity who interplay with Islamic(ate) sources of self and society as well as with resources from other traditions. Representing multiple disciplinary approaches, the contributors to this volume discuss a broad range of issues, such as secularization, colonialism, globalization, radicalism, human rights, migration, hermeneutics, mysticism, religious normativity and pluralism, while paying special attention to three geographical settings of South Asia, the Middle East and Euro-America.

This Festschrift brings together a range of scholars who congratulate Reinhard Schulze on the occasion of his 65th birthday, by shedding light and reflecting on the relation between Islam and modernity. Scholars from the fields of Islamic studies, religious studies, sociology and Arabic literature connect in various ways to Reinhard Schulze's work to constructively criticize a Eurocentric understanding of modernity. In diesem Buch wird das Verhältnis zwischen dem Islam und der Moderne, insbesondere aus der muslimischen Perspektive, behandelt. Ausgangspunkt hierfür ist die, vor allem im Westen, weit verbreitete Annahme, der Islam habe den Anschluss an die Moderne verpasst, welche auch als Erklärung für die Rückständigkeit in der muslimischen Welt dient. So soll das muslimische Denken beleuchtet werden, wobei Themen wie Demokratie, Modernisierung, Säkularisierung im Fokus stehen.

This book combines sociological theorising with studies on the Middle East and Islam. The diversity of modernities that can be observed in our world is linked to the claim of living in a global modernity, in a world society. The book underpins this claim with numerous excursions into Islamic history. It criticises the view that modernisation can be equated with westernisation and considers different projects of specifically Islamic modernities as integral parts of world society. From this perspective, the study contributes to the "provincialisation" of European history in contemporary social scientific thought. Contrary to the theories of postcolonialism associated with the call for the provincialisation of Europe, however, this book adheres to essential traditions of classical sociology. It thus aims to make a contribution to the social theoretical discussion on modernity, which is empirically underpinned with the help of data from the history of the Middle East and Islam. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.
