Seventh-day Adventism was born as a radical millenarian sect in nineteenth-century America. It has since spread across the world, achieving far more success in Latin America, Africa, and Asia than in its native land. In what seems a paradox, Adventist expectation of Christ’s imminent return has led the denomination to develop extensive educational, publishing, and health systems. Increasingly established within a variety of societies, Adventism over time has modified its views on many issues and accommodated itself to the “delay” of the Second Advent. In the process, it has become a multicultural religion that nonetheless reflects the dominant influence of its American origins. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Seventh-Day Adventists covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on key people, cinema, politics and government, sports, and critics of Ellen White. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Seventh-day Adventism.

This work documents the impact that the Great Awakening had on the inhabitants of colonial America’s Southern Backcountry. Special emphasis is placed on how this religious revival furrowed the ground on which the seeds of the American Revolution would sprout. The investigation shows how the Great Awakening can be traced to the Europe’s Age of Enlightenment. This effort also demonstrates how and why this revival spread so rapidly throughout the colonies. Special focus is placed on how the Great Awakening impacted the mindset of colonists of the Southern Backcountry. Most significantly, this research demonstrates how this 18thcentury revival not only cultivated a sense of American national identity, but how it also fostered a colonial mindset against established authority which, in turn, facilitated the success of the American Revolution. Additionally, this investigation will document (from a cross-cultural perspective) how religious revivals have fueled other revolutionary movements around the world. Such analysis will include the Celtic Druid Revolt, the Maji-Maji Rebellion of East Africa along with the Mad Man’s War in Southeast Asia. Lastly, the ethical ramifications of minimizing (or denying) the role that religion played in political and social transformations around the world will be addressed. This final point is of paramount importance given current trend in academia to minimize the role that religion played in spurring revolutions while emphasizing material (i.e. economic) causal factors. This attempt at divorcing religion from history is misguided and unethical because it is not only misleading but it also fails to fully acknowledge the beliefs and values that motivated individuals to take certain actions in the first place.

This book started out as an intense personal study by the author to evaluate and confirm his beliefs about God and salvation in regard to the teaching of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Why is it that so many Seventh-Day Adventists do not have the assurance of salvation? What criteria in the Bible and what specifically in Ellen G. White's writings might lead someone to believe they were not fit for heaven, that they did not qualify to be there, that God would not forgive them, and there was more required than just relying on Jesus's sacrifice to cover their sins? If they did not meet a strict set of rules, would God cast them aside in the end? In this book, you will find out just who are the saved, who are the lost, and what happens to them in the end and what end-times will look like according to Ellen G. White and the SDA Church. The author estimates he has spent well in excess of ten thousand hours and has read over fifteen thousand pages of material over a seven-year period in the preparation of this book. It is the author's hope and prayer that this book will make the reader question, not their belief in the saving grace of God and the loving sacrifice of Jesus but rather question anything that might have come between them and that grace.

Do you know who you are? “Of course I know who I am! I am Professor John Smith of Someplace, USA, born to Bob and Patty Smith.” But I’m not talking about your name, your profession, where you live, or who your parents are. Let me reword the question. Do you know who you are in terms of your religious beliefs and relationship with God? “Of course I know who I am! I am a Seventh-day Adventist.” OK, but what does that mean? Dr. Max Hammonds proposes that it goes beyond simply saying that we obey ALL of the Ten Commandments and that Jesus is coming back to take His followers home to heaven. Presented in this book is a carefully reasoned and biblically sound exploration of familiar topics that we always thought we understood. With warm personal stories told in the style of a private conversation at a quiet retreat, Dr. Hammonds works through the basic fundamentals of what it means to be a Christian and a Seventh-day Adventist in the real world, living for God during the Time of the End. This is not just another book about Adventist doctrines. This book gets at the heart of Christianity while focusing on the special calling we have as Adventists.
