'Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories, 1896 to 1901' is a collection of intriguing, and beautifully written short stories by Canadian author, L.M Montgomery. She was best known for her books set in Prince Edward Island, such as the 'Anne of Green Gables' series, 'Emily of New Moon', 'Kilmeny of the Orchard', and 'Jane of Lantern Hill'. The short story collection spans just five years of her writing career, and is one of many collections. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on 30th November 1874, New London, in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Her mother, Clara Woolner (Macneil), died before Lucy reached the age of two and so she was raised by her maternal grandparents in a family of wealthy Scottish immigrants. In 1908 Montgomery produced her first full-length novel, titled 'Anne of Green Gables'. It was an instant success, and following it up with several sequels, Montgomery became a regular on the best-seller list and an international household name.

Miss Montgomery continues to follow up the vein she opened in "Anne of Green Gables." These stories are all of Spencervale or Avonlea. Anne herself —or what we hope to be a caricature of her—appears on the cover, and is mentioned now and again within. But she is not the leading figure in any of the tales, which might have been called "Romances of Middle Age," so strongly does a single motive dominate them. Ten out of the dozen stories deal with belated love-affairs, or with the pathetic devotion of age for youth.
