Jane of Lantern Hill, one of her best sellers by the Canadian author L. M. Montgomery, was first published in 1937. It was adapted into a 1990 television film directed by Kevin Sullivan. This film was translated into French and Japanese languages. Sullivan Films were the producer of the highly popular Anne of Green Gables and Road to Avonlea television series.Montgomery began an idea on May 11, 1936, started this novel on August 21, and wrote the last chapter on February 3, 1937. She finished typing up the manuscript on February 25, as she could not hire a typist. The novel was written at Montgomery's house, "Journey's End", and its environment had influenced Montgomery's writing to create a positive setting for Jane in Toronto. She dedicated this noval to "JL", her companion cat. Chapter 37 involving a lion was based on a similar incident occurred in Atlantic Canada several years before which Montgomery was aware of had described it in a letter to GB MacMillan on February 23, 1938. Lucy Maud Montgomery was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908 which was an immediate success.
