Knowledge Based Intelligent Information Engineering Systems Allied Technologies

The annual Kes International Conference in Knowledge-based Intelligent Information Engineering Systems and Allied Technologies has become an event that is held in high regard by the intelligent systems community. The proceedings of the fifth conference represents a comprehensive survey of research on the theory and application of knowledge-based intelligent systems including topics such as: generic intelligent techniques - artificial neural networks, machine learning fuzzy and neuro-fuzzy techniques, and artificial life; applications of intelligent systems - condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, image processing, and high voltage systems; and allied technologies - communications, the Internet and web-based technologies, e-commerce, and computer pets. The proceedings should be of interest to those in the intelligent systems field, such as engineers, researchers and students.

Annotation The book contains the Proceedings of KES 2002, the Sixth Edition of the Knowledge-Based Intelligent Information & Engineering Systems International Conference. The conference papers presented new research results, focusing on three main areas of interest: Generic Intelligent Techniques: This area includes results on basic disciplines underlying knowledge-based and intelligent systems, such as artificial neural networks, machine learning, knowledge-based systems, case-based reasoning, intelligent agents and soft computing. Applications of Intelligent Systems: The second area presents results on vertical applications of intelligent systems, including condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, industrial control, medical systems, image processing, financial & stock market monitoring and prediction, natural language processing and others. Allied Technologies: This area includes novel contributions on intelligent systems' applications to traditional research fields such as digital and computer communications, signal processing, virtual reality, multi-media, web-based technologies, human-computer interfaces and software engineering."

The KES conferences attract a wide range of interest. The broad focus of the c- ference series is the theory and applications of computational intelligence and em- gent technologies. Once purely a research field, intelligent systems have advanced to the point where their abilities have been incorporated into many conventional appli- tion areas. The quest to encapsulate human knowledge and capabilities in domains such as reasoning, problem solving, sensory analysis, and other complex areas has been avidly pursued. This is because it has been demonstrated that these abilities have definite practical applications. The techniques long ago reached the point where they are being exploited to provide commercial advantages for companies and real beneficial effects on profits. KES 2004 provided a valuable mechanism for delegates to obtain a profound view of the latest intelligent systems research into a range of - gorithms, tools and techniques. KES 2004 also gave delegates the chance to come into contact with those applying intelligent systems in diverse commercial areas. The combination of theory and practice represents a uniquely valuable opportunity for - preciating the full spectrum of intelligent-systems activity and the “state of the art”.

The three volume set LNAI 4251, LNAI 4252, and LNAI 4253 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Knowledge-Based Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems, KES 2006, held in Bournemouth, UK, in October 2006. The 480 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from about 1400 submissions. The papers present a wealth of original research results from the field of intelligent information processing.

During recent decades we have witnessed not only the introduction of automation into the work environment but we have also seen a dramatic change in how automation has influenced the conditions of work. While some 30 years ago the addition of a computer was considered only for routine and boring tasks in support of humans, the balance has dramatically shifted to the computer being able to perform almost any task the human is willing to delegate. The very fast pace of change in processor and information technology has been the main driving force behind this development. Advances in automation and especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled the formation of a rather unique team with human and electronic members. The team is still supervised by the human with the machine as a subordinate associate or assistant, sharing responsibility, authority and autonomy over many tasks. The requirement for teaming human and machine in a highly dynamic and unpredictable task environment has led to impressive achievements in many supporting technologies. These include methods for system analysis, design and engineering and in particular for information processing, for cognitive and complex knowledge [1] engineering .
