How the internet and powerful online tools are democratizing and accelerating scientific discovery Reinventing Discovery argues that we are living at the dawn of the most dramatic change in science in more than three hundred years. This change is being driven by powerful cognitive tools, enabled by the internet, which are greatly accelerating scientific discovery. There are many books about how the internet is changing business, the workplace, or government. But this is the first book about something much more fundamental: how the internet is transforming our collective intelligence and our understanding of the world. From the collaborative mathematicians of the Polymath Project to the amateur astronomers of Galaxy Zoo, Reinventing Discovery tells the exciting story of the unprecedented new era in networked science. It will interest anyone who wants to learn about how the online world is revolutionizing scientific discovery—and why the revolution is just beginning.

As late as 1950, many chess clubs in America excluded women. The Marshall Chess Club in New York City was an exception, organizing the U.S. Women's Chess Championship beginning in the late 1930s. Since the 1980s, the average rating of the players has increased. The Saint Louis Chess Club has organized the championship since 2009, with record-setting prizes. Drawing on archives and original interviews with the living U.S. Women's Chess Champions, this book examines their careers with biographies, photos, and 171 annotated games, most of which are from the 60 championships between 1937 and 2020.

The writing of this monograph was stimulated on the one hand by experience gained in the study of "cancer families", and on the other, by the frequent perplexed and bewildered comments made by numerous physicians who have expressed amaze ment that we could think that "cancer is hereditary". In reviewing the world literature it became immediately apparent that no compendium on the subject of cancer genetics was available to the physician or research scientist. Therefore this monograph has been written for the following reasons: 1) To illuminate the problem for those who may have missed or ignored the evidence supporting a genetic etiology for certain malignant neoplasms; 2) to supply useful information to all practicing physicians regarding genetic risks to their patients; and 3) to provide new thoughts on the subject for use by cancer investigators. Finally, our paramount hope is that information gleaned through the reading of this monograph may contribute to the early dia gnosis of cancer in members of high risk "cancer families".
