La Philosophie Devenue Folle

Trois débats nous obsèdent : autour du genre, des droits de l’animal, de l’euthanasie. Et trois disciplines politiquement correctes traitent désormais de ces questions dans le monde universitaire : gender studies, animal studies, bioéthique. Cependant, lorsqu’on lit les textes des fondateurs de ces disciplines, John Money, Judith Butler, Peter Singer, Donna Haraway et quelques autres, on s’aperçoit que, derrière les bons sentiments affichés, se font jour des conséquences absurdes sinon abjectes. Si le genre n’est pas lié au sexe, pourquoi ne pas en changer tous les matins ? Si le corps est à la disposition de notre conscience, pourquoi ne pas le modifier à l’infini ? S’il n’y a pas de différence entre animaux et humains, pourquoi ne pas faire des expériences scientifiques sur les comateux plutôt que sur les animaux ? Pourquoi ne pas avoir de relations sexuelles avec son chien ? S’il est des vies dignes d’être vécues et d’autres qui ne le sont pas, pourquoi ne pas liquider les « infirmes », y compris les enfants « défectueux » ? Pourquoi ne pas nationaliser les organes des quasi-morts au profit d’humains plus prometteurs ? Jean-François Braunstein a mené un travail considérable et novateur : il a lu les milliers de pages de ces penseurs célébrés dans le monde occidental ; il revient sur leurs idées, leurs contradictions, leur parcours personnel ; il analyse, souligne, contredit, déconstruit. L’erreur consiste à vouloir « effacer les limites » : entre les sexes, entre les animaux et les humains, entre les vivants et les morts. Il convient, au contraire, d’affronter ces limites qui nous constituent. Oui, parfois la philosophie devient folle, quand elle oublie l’homme.

The toppling of statues in the name of anti-racism is disconcerting, as is the violence sometimes displayed towards others in the name of gender equality. The emancipation movements of the past seem to have undergone a subtle transformation: the struggle now is not so much to bring about progress but rather to denounce offenses, express indignation, and assert identities, sometimes in order to demand recognition. The individual’s commitment to self-definition and self-appreciation, understood as the exercise of a sovereign right, has become a distinctive sign of our time. Elisabeth Roudinesco takes us into the darker corners of identity thinking, where conspiracy theories, rejection of the other, and incitement to violence are often part of the mix. But she also points to several paths that could lead us away from despair and toward a possible world in which everyone can adhere to the principle according to which “I am myself, that’s all there is to it” without denying the diversity of human communities or essentializing either universality or difference. This bold and courageous interrogation of identity politics will be of great interest to anyone concerned with the state of our world today.

This volume focuses on how, in Europe, the debate on the commons is discussed in regard to historical and contemporary dimensions, critically referencing the work of Elinor Ostrom. It also explores from the perspective of new institutional political ecology (NIPE) how Europe directly and indirectly affected and affects the commons globally. Most of the research on the management of commons pool resources is limited to dealing with one of two topics: either the interaction between local participatory governance and development of institutions for commons management, or a political- economy approach that focuses on global change as it is related to the increasingly globalised expansion of capitalist modes of production, consumption and societal reproduction. This volume bridges the two, addressing how global players affect the commons worldwide and how they relate to responses emerging from within the commons in a global- local (glocal) world. Authors from a range of academic disciplines present research findings on recent developments on the commons, including: historical insights; new innovations for participatory institutions building in Europe or several types of commons grabbing, especially in Africa related to European investments; and restrictions on the management of commons at the international level. European case studies are included, providing interesting examples of local participation in commons resource management, while simultaneously showing Europe as a centre for globalized capitalism and its norms and values, affecting the rest of the world, particularly developing countries. This book will be of interest to students and researchers from a wide range of disciplines including natural resource management, environmental governance, political geography and environmental history.

La bibliographie de Jacques Lerot impressionne. Par son volume - tout au long de sa carriere, il a ete un auteur fecond - , mais aussi par sa qualite - ainsi, son Precis de linguistique generale (Paris, editions de Minuit, 1993) - et par l'ouverture d'esprit qu'elle manifeste. A l'occasion de son depart a la retraite, vingt et un amis - collegues de Belgique ou de l'etranger, anciens etudiants ou doctorants - se sont reunis a l'instigation de Heinz Bouillon pour proposer 18 articles, ecrits en francais, allemand, neerlandais ou anglais, quatre langues que Jacques Lerot pratique assidument. Comme les horizons de Jacques sont larges, les sujets etudies sont multiculturels, abordant des regions aussi bien proches que lointaines comme le Burundi ou Madagascar. Ils illustrent aussi la multiplicite des diverses approches possibles dans l'etude des faits de langue, passant de la linguistique a la litterature sans oublier la didactique. Dans sa vision scientifique, Jacques Lerot a toujours soutenu que toute explication avait sa place si l'on distingue des niveaux multiples. Gageons qu'il trouvera pour chacune des contributions ici offertes une belle place dans son systeme de pensee a lui.
