Christianisme et libération politique : thème à la mode ou expression d’une espérance ? Le courant d’idées exprimé par la théologie politique, résulte d’une conviction partagée par un nombre sans cesse croissant de chrétiens : leur foi n’est pas digne d’être confessée si elle n’est pas vécue en relation positive avec l’histoire de la libération de l’homme. Mais dans quelle mesure ne s’agit-il pas là d’une conviction subjective, qui se heurte en fait aux possibilités objectives du christianisme historique et social ? La théologie n’est que trop portée à prendre ses désirs pour la réalité. Dans une perspective de libération de l’homme, on ne peut négliger de vérifier analytiquement ses expressions, même — et justement ! — les plus généreuses. C’est à cette œuvre de discernement, englobant la présentation et la vérification du message de la théologie politique, que s’est consacré un groupe de travail animé par M. Xhaufflaire, dans le cadre du Centre d’études théologiques CEP, et sur la demande de la section théologique de la Commission nationale belge de justice et paix. Le présent ouvrage rassemble la majeure partie des résultats de l’étude entreprise. Il est désormais impossible qu’un discours chrétien se dispense d’intégrer l’analyse des conditions sociales et institutionnelles de la réalisation de son message. Tel est le présupposé à la base du présent ouvrage, qui intéressera non seulement les théologiens et les sociologues, mais aussi tous ceux qui se préoccupent d’examiner la part positive que le christianisme est susceptible d’assumer, pour empêcher notre société de devenir de plus en plus inhumaine.

This book examines the nature and operation of social thought and language as used in everyday life, and looks at social thinking through the complex patternings and functions of discourse. It is based on extensive empirical evidence about the language of contemporary racism and nationalism, drawn from the vast corpus of the discourse of Swiss racism gathered by the author from a variety of written and spoken sources. Three principal investigations, of sociocentrism, causality and the perception of time, are used to sinuate and define the nature and working of everyday speech and reasoning. First published in English in 1990, Speech and Reasoning in Everyday Life is a major contribution to the analysis of the discourse of contemporary ideology and politics. Its theoretical contribution makes this work richly deserving of an introduction to an English-speaking audience of sociologists, social psychologists and anthropologists.

This third volume in a much praised series on The French Revolution and the Creation of Modern Political Culture examines the way in which the Revolution has been portrayed in European thought and its impact upon the development of political philosophy in the nineteenth century. Opening with the influence of Burke and other contemporaries of the Revolution and the ensuing debate over the question "Why the Terror?", this volume explores such diverse themes as the legacy of the Revolution on the political and social evolution of Germany, England, Italy and Russia; the crisis it brought about in the Catholic Church; and the difficulties encountered in determining the end of the Revolution. By showing that the upheaval in European politics and philosophy caused by the French Revolution continued to shape nations, peoples and thought, the texts brought together in this volume permit a better understanding of the event's extraordinary complexity.

The thesis examines the Catholic social teaching, as it is expressed in papal encyclicals, in wide context of contemporary political doctrines and major events of 20th century. The author proposes a method of following political messages of the Catholic Church during the last century. He challenges a standard Church's claim of immutability of its teaching. He shows, on the contrary, firm contextualisation both of Church's action and of its official message. From classical confrontational strategy face to modernity, through the attitude of "dialogue" during the Second Vatican Council, the Church insists on remaining a recognized participant of significant contemporary debates even in conditions of postmodernity.
