A Series Land Rover has to be the ultimate life-sized automotive jigsaw puzzle. Simple to repair, with a good supply of new and used parts, a restoration is well within the capabilities of an amateur mechanic. While the official Parts and Workshop Manuals can be considered essential reading they were written for professional mechanics working on reasonably new, unmodified vehicles – not a 60 year old model assembled with parts from different eras. They will tell you very little about parts compatibility over the generations, how to repair a bulkhead or front panel or the best techniques to assemble your vehicle onto a new chassis. This manual seeks to answer many of the commonly asked questions and offers practical solutions, tips and techniques for the common problems encountered when restoring and maintaining a Series Land Rover. It covers: •history, vehicle development and compatibility of parts •the overhaul of the major mechanical components including engine, gearbox and axles •practical techniques for body repairs, fitment and alignment •in-depth chassis and bulkhead repairs •how to decide between saving or replacing a major component •the current availability of components •major current restoration trends: functional rebuild, resto-mod build, patina recommission or concours restoration

There has rarely been a British success story like the Land-Rover. Developed in a short time and on a small budget, it was launched in 1948 and having passed though many revisions is still a world leader today. The Series detailed in Land Rover takes the reader from the beginning to 1985, and the many surviving examples, supported by a comprehensive parts and restoration industry, are seeing a solid increase in values. Here James Taylor, the premier historian of the marque, provides a detailed study of the Land-Rover's evolution through the period and the variants and special-purpose versions that were produced. Uniquely, it is the manufacturer's own sales brochures and advertising that supply the illustrations, which number some 400 images and serve not only to correctly depict the vehicles but also to re-create the atmosphere of the times when they were made.

After ten years of production, the Solihull-manufactured Land Rover was established as a useful 4x4, popular with farmers, armies, and those whose employment took them far from the beaten track. Following a redesign, the Series II Land Rover was launched in April 1958. It was available in two wheelbases, with a choice of diesel or petrol engines and a variety of body styles including pick-ups and soft-tops and, aimed more at travel and people-carrying rather than agricultural work, short and long wheelbase Station Wagons. The main difference that identified the new Land Rovers at a glance was the radius pressed into the aluminium bodywork below the galvanized waist rail. This changed the Land Rover's appearance considerably and was a shape that endured until 2016 in the Land Rover Defender. The Series IIA was introduced in 1961 and through a production run that last until 1971, a succession of upgrades, mainly detail and cosmetic changes, followed. The distinctive Station Wagon models – unofficially referred to as 'Safari' models – became popular with overland travelers and were often seen on location in TV nature programs, in National Geographic magazine and in the hands of aid agencies all of which promoted the Land Rover, which had most of the market to itself, especially in export markets such as Australasia and Africa.
