New York City’s magnificent Eldridge Street Synagogue was built in 1887 in response to the great wave of Jewish immigrants who fled persecution in eastern Europe. Finding their way to the Lower East Side, the new arrivals formed a vibrant Jewish community that flourished from the 1850s until the 1940s. Their synagogue served not only as a place of worship but also as a singularly important center in the development of American Judaism. A near ruin in the 1980s that was recently reopened after a massive twenty-year restoration, the Eldridge Street Synagogue has been named a National Historic Landmark. But as Bill Moyers tells us in his foreword, the synagogue is also “a landmark of the spirit, . . . the spirit of a new nation committed to the old idea of liberty.” Annie Polland uses elements of the building’s architecture—the façade, the benches, the grooves worn into the sanctuary floor—as points of departure to discuss themes, people, and trends at various moments in the synagogue’s history, particularly during its heyday from 1887 until the 1930s. Exploring the synagogue’s rich archives, the author shines new light on the religious life of immigrant Jews, introduces various rabbis, cantors and congregants, and analyzes the significance of this special building in the context of the larger American-Jewish experience. This is an 872 page New Testament Study Bible with footnotes written from a Landmark Baptist point of view on Church Truth. It is a work completed by several cooperating contemporary Ordained Elders of the Landmark Baptist Faith. It is available in Hard Back, Soft Back and in Electronic Format. The King James Version drew heavily from the Tyndale and Coverdale translations of the New Testament. Tyndale and Coverdale translated the Greek term ekklesia as congregation. However, King James ordered his translators (within his 15 rules to the translators), not to translate ekklesia but instead to use the ecclesiastical term church. All contributors to the Landmark Study New Testament are thankful to be free from the rules of a human King for this edition. We trust and pray that the great King of Kings will bless this effort to His honor and glory. We humbly present the Landmark Study New Testament for the edification of Gods elect and a clearer understanding of New Testament Ecclesiology. The KJV text remains intact here except where they did not translate ekklesia and baptizo by order of King James. We have also added "Modern English" words in brackets next to some of the "Elizabethan English" words that some call "archaic". Elder Larry J. Killion.

This book is an anthology of landmark essays in rhetorical criticism. In historical usage, a landmark marks a path or a boundary; as a metaphor in social and intellectual history, landmark signifies some act or event that marks a significant achievement or turning point in the progress or decline of human effort. In the history of an academic discipline, the historically established senses of landmark are mixed together, jostling to set out and protect the turfmarkers of academic specialization; aligning footnotes to signify the beacons that have guided thought and, against these "conservative" tendencies, attempting to contribute fresh insights that tempt others along new trails. The editor has chosen essays for this collection that give some sense of the history of rhetorical criticism in this century, especially as it has been practiced in the discipline of speech communication. He also emphasizes materials that may illustrate where the discipline conceives itself to be going -- how it has marked its boundaries; how it has established beacons to invite safety or warn us from the rocks; and how it has sought to preserve a tradition by subjecting it to constant revision and struggle. In the hope of providing some coherence, the scope of this collection is limited to rhetorical criticism as it has been practiced and understood within the discipline of speech communication in North America in this century.
