Licensed To Transform

Before becoming licensed educators, student teachers often demonstrate a license to transform the lives of others. A recent cohort of teacher candidates created this student teaching alphabet highlighting their personal, philosophical, and ethical license to transform. Original artifacts (i.e., poems, letters, artwork) serve as entry-points through which to consider how life events, aspirations, challenges, and beliefs contribute to one's emerging and evolving personal and professional identities. Readers are invited to contemplate their experiences, interactions, and lives in original and provocative ways. In educational psychology and teacher education/preparation courses, this book is meaningful for pre-service, early, mid-career, and veteran teachers as well as those considering a career in education. More than a curriculum of student teaching, it challenges us to imagine a curriculum of transformation that reflects the gestalt of all dimensions of life. More broadly, it can be useful for coursework in areas of the humanities, liberal arts, sociology, and curriculum studies. Individuals from a variety of backgrounds can reflect on their work and their lives through phenomenological lenses that validate the richness and complexities of their lived experiences. As a teacher's curriculum-as a curriculum of life-readers can ponder the ways they are being and becoming the educators-and the human beings-they've aspired to be. These teacher candidates are teaching for more than a license; they are teaching for better, more equitable futures. With the strength of their commitment and the audacity of their passion for change, these student teachers have much to teach us.complexities of their lived experiences. Decisionmakers (including implementers, policymakers, technical agencies) require accurate and relevant evidence by which to plan, develop, and implement nutrition and health programs in a timely fashion. They need to know the effectiveness of interventions and policies, how and in what settings these interventions work, and their cost-effectiveness. Systematic reviews are increasingly used to inform policy decisions and produce guidance for health systems. Production of systematic reviews, however, is often protracted, resource intensive, and incompatible with decision-making timelines; they can take one to two years to complete. Rapid reviews offer an alternative, rapid and timely approach to providing actionable and relevant evidence that can be used to inform decisions about health systems in both routine and emergency contexts. Rapid reviews are generated through a transparent, scientific, and reproducible method that preserves key principles of knowledge synthesis.

This brief summarizes nutrition-relevant policies in Nigeria. We examine i) nutrition context, policy objectives, indicators, budget, and activities, ii) key beneficiaries, actors and coordination, iii) monitoring, evaluation, and accountability, and iv) whether current policies are aligned with the World Health Assembly (WHA) global targets.

Millions of computer users regularly bind themselves to software license terms with the click of a mouse, usually without reading anything but the word "agree." Licenses for software as diverse as Microsoft Windows and Linux, and terms of use for websites such as Facebook, are all subject not only to intellectual property and commercial law, but also to the private law of the license, which comes in many forms, each with its advocates. Microsoft, for example, maintains that its proprietary model gives users the rights they need while creating the incentives that have made the United States the global software leader, while Richard Stallman - creator of the GNU General Public License and author of a number of free software programs - asserts that proprietary licensing enables software companies to "hoard" software they should be sharing. In The Software License Unveiled, Douglas Phillips looks at both of these extremes and questions how these proliferating but largely unread license terms affect access to software, one of the economy's most valuable resources. While highlighting the obvious divergences, he makes the more illuminating case that most current models - spanning the spectrum from proprietary to free - have one key feature in common: to an increasing extent, each license model extends, modifies, or displaces public law that would otherwise apply. Unlike books that advocate one form of licensing or another, this one reframes the debate to propose that going forward a key challenge for lawyers, scholars, policymakers, and the public is to consider whether "legislation by license" should be the means for controlling software access.
