Before skyscrapers forever transformed the landscape of the modern metropolis, the conveyance that made them possible had to be created. Invented in New York in the 1850s, the elevator became an urban fact of life on both sides of the Atlantic by the early twentieth century. While it may at first glance seem a modest innovation, it had wide-ranging effects, from fundamentally restructuring building design to reinforcing social class hierarchies by moving luxury apartments to upper levels, previously the domain of the lower classes. The cramped elevator cabin itself served as a reflection of life in modern growing cities, as a space of simultaneous intimacy and anonymity, constantly in motion. In this elegant and fascinating book, Andreas Bernard explores how the appearance of this new element changed notions of verticality and urban space. Transforming such landmarks as the Waldorf-Astoria and Ritz Tower in New York, he traces how the elevator quickly took hold in large American cities while gaining much slower acceptance in European cities like Paris and Berlin. Combining technological and architectural history with the literary and cinematic, Bernard opens up new ways of looking at the elevator--as a secular confessional when stalled between floors or as a recurring space in which couples fall in love. Rising upwards through modernity, Lifted takes the reader on a compelling ride through the history of the elevator.

Research shows that building muscle helps the body burn more calories 24/7 and that resistance training is the most effective way to torch body fat. Yet that message is still lost on many women who fear that weight lifting will make them bulky, turn their skin green, and give them Incredible Hulk muscles like their boyfriends'. Women have more options than step aerobics or running on a treadmill to shed pounds: They can weight-train in a very specific manner designed to make the most of a woman's unique physiology. Lift to Get Lean is the first beginner's guide to strength training from Women's Health that is written specifically for women by a woman. Holly Perkins is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) who has been teaching the fat-burning secrets of weight training exclusively to women for more than 20 years. Perkins doesn't follow men's rules when it comes to building muscle. Her Lift to Get Lean delivers a three-step system: Technique, Movement Speed, and the Last 2 Reps Rule, which make all the difference in developing the kind of strong, lean, and sexy body women want. Perkins offers four different 90-day training programs that efficiently build functional strength along with leaner legs, stronger arms, and a sexier butt.

Aimed at fitness professionals, coaches and sportspeople, this is the definitive guide to lifting maximum weights from beginner level through to advanced. This applies to those who wish to build body strength and bulk as well as people wanting to improve their performance in a range of other sports. Heavy weights are very popular in gyms but there is a lack of supervision and good instruction. This is not only dangerous to the gym user but also bad news for the gym, and it prompted the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) to authorise a range of new courses designed by the book's author. The Complete Guide to Lifting Heavy Weights is required reading for students taking these courses, and an essential guide for anyone who works with or supervises the use of heavy weights. As with all titles in the Complete Guide series it is packed with information, tips, strategies and training plans. Well-illustrated and authoritative, it covers everything you need to know to deal with heavy weights safely and successfully.

Extending modules are generalizations of injective modules and, dually, lifting modules generalize projective supplemented modules. This duality exhibits a certain asymmetry. While the theory of extending modules is well documented in monographs and text books, the purpose of this monograph is to provide a thorough study of supplements and projectivity conditions needed to investigate classes of modules related to lifting modules.
